The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed King

DÍA 6 DE 8

The Divine Heritage

The Davidic King as God’s son ruled his heavenly Father’s Kingdom as regent. Thus the King inherited the kingdom of God whose dominion extended to the ends of the earth (Genesis 12:2-3; 18:18)! All the nations of this world are the King’s heritage, for his heavenly Father is the one who created them and allotted their periods and boundaries (Acts 17:26). However, the presence of hostile powers and rebellious kings (2:1-3) reveals that this right to rule over nations was not properly realized. Therefore, God invites his son to ask him for the fulfilment of his royal heritage. The Davidic Kings of Israel were surrounded by powerful kingdoms and empires. It was humanely impossible for the Israelite King to subdue these heathen hegemonies with the might of his military. Thus the Davidic Kings are called to submit to the Lordship of the sovereign King of Kings, and seek his eternal power!

It is the desire of God to subdue these nations under the rule of his anointed King. Thus he promises that the Messianic King of Israel will break the rebellious nations with a rod of iron. The royal sceptre of the Davidic King will shatter the enemies of God’s kingdom into pieces like a potter’s vessel. The Davidic Kings were to be mighty warrior Kings who realized their right to inherit the nations by violent force! The King of Israel is prophesied to decimate all rebels who resist his holy rule.

In the person of Jesus, we see this glorious vision of a victorious warrior King subduing his enemies by violent war. Jesus in his death upon the cross fought the ancient foe – Satan. He crushed the serpent and emerged victorious over death! To his disciples, the risen Lord Jesus declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18). Jesus is the one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron now caught up to God and to his throne (Revelation 12:5). One day soon, he will come back as the warrior King riding a white steed leading the armies of heaven against all who resist his holy rule. That day, King Jesus will strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:11-16). Then the Son of David will possess the earth, and the Kingdom of God will be finally consummated!
