Prostitute. Harlot. These were Rahab’s descriptors in every biblical account but one. The harsh reality of Rahab’s former life in Jericho magnifies the grace within redemption. Her home in Jericho was a place of debauchery and sexual immorality – the perfect setting for a redemption story.

Upon the return of two men sent to “view the land” (Jericho; Joshua 2:1 ESV), they reported that Rahab had opened her home as a safe retreat from the pursuit of Jericho’s king. The men were spared, returned to Joshua and the Israelite army, and saw the walls of Jericho “Come a tumblin’ down.” Rahab negotiated with the men to spare her family from the destruction (Joshua 6:25).

Rahab moved to Israel, married a Jewish man (Salmon), entered the line of Judah by marriage, and bore a son, Boaz (Mat. 1:5). That means Rahab, a former prostitute, joined (and continued) the lineage of Jesus Christ by the opportunity that two Jewish pseudo spies needed a place to hide.

By grace, He chooses to write a redemption story with our lives.

1. The Old Testament identifies Rahab as a harlot. Matthew names her the mother of Boaz. How has God given you a “new name”?

Prayer: God, you bring all things into perfect order. Thank you for your unending grace in every moment. Teach me to trust your plan, knowing that you will be with me as I go.
