Correction is Not Rejection!

Sometimes to my detriment, I am resistant to correction. In my writing, I need help with punctuation. I'm apprehensive about allowing my associates to proofread my material because I'm afraid they'll find mistakes. I'd instead learn it myself at the expense of being partly wrong. HOW STUPID! While thinking about this one day, I asked myself, “Why am I this way? Why am I resistant to correction?” Guess what? I figured it out, and maybe you're like me.

My dad was rough, so my mom always came to my aid. Eventually, they divorced. My stepdad had an attitude of correction from hell. I knew it, so I resisted his correction and set a pattern for myself that I still deal with.

To me, correction feels like rejection, but necessary to find the right path. All these life events have caused me to draw back from correction. However, it would be best if you were open to it to improve yourself. Don't reject; receive. Find the right people and allow yourself to become vulnerable. Then listen and change.

Think about it:

What feelings arise in you when you are corrected? Are you embarrassed, ashamed, angry, or resentful of correction? Can you think of anyone or anything in your past that may have made you feel this way? Did you have an overly aggressive parent or guardian? Do you have high expectations of yourself to be right all the time?

Pray about it:

Dear God, please show me how to be accepting of correction. Please help me not to be ashamed or resentful when someone holds me accountable. Give me wisdom and understanding in giving and receiving correction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
