Civil War Soldier’s Bible

Some of the most valuable Bibles printed in the 19th century are Soldier’s Bibles from the Civil War—especially Confederate editions. In the Battle of Antietam, at Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1824, Private Richard R. Best’s Bible was in his pocket. It stopped a bullet to his chest, preventing a fatal wound. One solider, during the war, wrote that he read Psalm 91 and that he was “both spiritually and physically strengthened” by its words.
