The Lent Project is an initiative of Biola University's Center for Christianity, Culture and the Arts. Each daily devotion includes a portion of Scripture, a devotional, a prayer, a work of visual art or a video, a piece of music, and a poem plus brief commentaries on the artworks and artists. The Seven Last Words of Christ refers to the seven short phrases uttered by Jesus on the cross, as gathered from the four Christian gospels. This devotional project connects word, image, voice and song into daily meditations on these words.

James wrote: "... if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.” (James 1:23-24 NLT) The Pharisees thought they were obeying the word. I wonder, could this be us? Are we Pharisees? You’re invited to gaze afresh, ditch religion, and grow in the childlike intimacy God desires and adores.

If you were to define ‘the greatest evil,’ you might think of murder, child abuse, or human trafficking. C.S. Lewis mentions something else: pride. The Gospel of Mark presents Jesus as the Son of God and the perfect servant of God. This reading plan explores the second Gospel. The persecution of Christians was on Mark's mind as he wrote this Gospel. Mark told the story of Jesus' life in ways that strengthened the faith of early Christians and encouraged them to persevere through suffering.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Key themes include, I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. We worship God with our actions not just words. We enjoy God’s presence.

Change often feels like a collision. Getting jolted out of the rut of predictability doesn’t always feel good, but it does have the potential to lead to something positive. Scripture is full of examples of people who collided with God and were never the same because of it. That didn’t mean it was always easy, but it did mean they were forever changed as a result. What would it take to put yourself in a position to collide with God?

Mark uses the word “immediately” over forty times in his Gospel, emphasizing the intentional nature of Jesus’ ministry. The quick succession of healings and miracles shows that Jesus “came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:44). Through Mark’s Gospel, we are reminded that true greatness in God’s kingdom comes not through selfish ambition, but by being the servant of all.
