What about church?
I’ve lost count of the number of times people have said, ‘I’m not religious’, which really means ‘I don’t go to church’. Often, I discover that these same people do believe in a loving God or are curious about faith. They’ve just had bad experiences or heard terrible things about church. I don’t want to defend ‘the church’ but really there are some wonderful church communities around. In a time when loneliness is on the rise, it’s worth thinking about what a good church community offers. If you’re looking for a church to join then of course transparent, authentic, accountable leadership is important. It’s also worth looking at how you can get connected beyond a Sunday service. Church is not a club, rather it’s a place where you can be seen and known with grace, but that means you need to do more than arrive late and leave early.
I’m moved each week at our church, by the offer to open my heart to the kindness of someone praying with me, then and there, for the things that weigh on my heart. Church is about the people and the love and support you can receive and give as we all lean into the love of God. I’ve discovered that the most life-giving, personally transforming values come from Christian faith. Friendships within my Christian community allow me to be challenged and encouraged to grow.
Jesus lived life with followers in community, and we’re encouraged to do the same. So, if you’re a non-religious believer or curious about faith, why not check out some local churches on the web and then give at least four weeks to visiting one and connect?

“Jesus didn’t care about the social cost, or about being the guest of a sinner. He exemplified how we’re to live within community.” (Do You See Me? – Bree Bond). Living with and around people isn’t always easy, but in Jesus we have the best example! So take a look at how He spent time within His local community and see what you can learn!
