Clean Cups and True Hearts

We've all seen it—the coffee cup left too long with cream inside. From the outside, it might look fine, but open it up, and it's a science project. Jesus uses this exact image to confront religious hypocrisy.

The Pharisees were masters of appearance management. They counted out mint leaves to tithe, made sure everyone saw their prayers, and polished their public image until it gleamed. But Jesus saw through it. He called them "whitewashed tombs"—beautiful on the outside, full of death on the inside.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: we can all fall into this trap. We show up at church looking put together, but Monday reveals a different story. We manage our Instagram presence while our prayer life withers. We talk about God's love while harboring bitterness, greed, or secret sin.

Jesus isn't interested in our performance. He wants transformation.

Notice what Jesus says: "First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean." When we focus on our hearts—confessing sin, pursuing righteousness, showing mercy—the outside naturally follows. Authentic faith works from the inside out, not the outside in.

The Pharisees wanted everyone to think they had it all together. But Jesus died for people who know they don't. He didn't come for those who think they're righteous; He came for those who know they're broken and need grace.

So what's inside your cup today? What are you hiding behind a polished exterior? Jesus invites you to stop pretending and start being real. Bring your mess to Him. Confess what's really going on. Let Him clean you from the inside out.

Don't be the guy who keeps others from God because of hypocrisy. Be the man who draws people to Jesus by being honest about your need for grace. When your inside matches your outside—when your Monday walk matches your Sunday talk—that's when real transformation happens.

Jesus didn't trash-talk the Pharisees to shame them. He did it to wake them up. Let His words wake you up today. Clean the inside of the cup first.
