The Kings Defeated by Moses
1On the east side of the Jordan, Moses and the Israelites had conquered two kings, Sihon and Og. The Israelites occupied their territory, which extended from the Arnon Valley in the south to Mount Hermon in the north, including the entire eastern desert. # 12:1 Or “all the eastern Arabah [dry and desolate area].”
2Sihon, king of the Amorites, reigned in Heshbon # 12:2 Heshbon, the capital city of the Amorites, was about fifteen miles northeast of the northern end of the Dead Sea. Heshbon means “reasoning” or “stronghold” and hints at the mind of man. and ruled over the southern half of Gilead, from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon River Valley in the south to the River Jabbok in the north, which is the border of the Ammonites. 3The western area of his kingdom included the eastern desert from Lake Galilee to the Dead Sea (the Salt Sea). His territory included the area east of the Dead Sea as far as the town of Beth Jeshimoth # 12:3 Or “House of Deserts.” and as far south as Mount Pisgah.
4Og, the king of Bashan, # 12:4 Bashan means “snake.” It is the region east and northeast of Lake Galilee. was one of the last of the race of giants. # 12:4 Or “Rephaites [giants].” For the defeat of King Og, see Num. 21:33–35. He reigned in the cities of Ashtaroth and Edrei. # 12:4 Ashtaroth (also the name of a Canaanite goddess) and Edrei are two cities to the east and southeast of Lake Galilee. Edrei means “by force” or “power.” He ruled over all of Bashan, the northern half of Gilead, to the boundary of Sihon, king of Heshbon. 5His territory included Mount Hermon in the north and Salecah in the east, and south to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites. 6Moses and the Israelites conquered the two kings, Sihon and Og. Moses, the servant of Yahweh, divided their land east of the Jordan among the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

7On the west side of the Jordan, Joshua and the Israelites defeated thirty-one kings, from Baal-Gad in the Lebanon Valley in the north to Mount Halak in the south near Edom. # 12:7 Or “which rises toward Seir,” a mountainous region of Edom. Then Joshua divided this land among the tribes of Israel and gave them their portions as permanent possessions—8the hill country, the western foothills, and the Jordan Valley, the mountain slopes, the wilderness of Judea, # 12:8 Or “the eastern slopes.” and the southern desert region—the land of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

31. The king of Tirzah # 12:9–24 Our heavenly Joshua (Jesus) has defeated every principality, power, and stronghold that resists our advance in Christ. The name of God, El (Mighty God), according to its gematria (the numerical value in Jewish culture), equals thirty-one. The meaning of the names of the principalities of these thirty-one kings could represent the thirty-one strongholds that dull our understanding of the finished work of Christ for us: (1) Jericho represents walls, impossibilities, limitations. (2) Ai means “heap of ruins” (representing the world system). (3) Jerusalem means “lord of righteousness” (counterfeit spirituality, under the rule of Adoni-zedek). (4) Hebron means “fellowship”; Hoham means “he crushed” (broken fellowship with God). (5) Jarmuth means “lifted up”; Piram means “wild donkey” (pride and arrogance). (6) Lachish means “impregnable”; Japhia means “splendid, bright” (human ingenuity). (7) Eglon means “bull-like” (human arguments and oratory). (8) Gezer means “steep, precipitous” (sharp tongue, stinging words). (9) Debir means “speaker, oracle” (political spirit). (10) Geder means “wall” (defensiveness). (11) Hormah means “destroyed, laid waste” (defeat, depression). (12) Arad means “wild fugitive” (rebellions, lawlessness). (13) Libnah means “white” (self-righteousness, hypocrisy). (14) Adullam means “justice of the people” (approval of others, insecurity). (15) Makkedah means “place of shepherds” (false shepherds, selfish leadership). (16) Bethel means “house of God” (religious spirit). (17) Tappuah means “apple, distillation” (drunkenness). (18) Hepher means “pit, well” (shame, condemnation). (19) Aphek means “strength, fortress” (self-sufficiency). (20) Lasharon means “like the plain” (complacency, passivity). (21) Madon means “strife, contention” (divisive, argumentative). (22) Hazor means “enclosed, fortified”; Jabin means “intelligent” (human wisdom, mind of man). (23) Shimron Meron means “guardian of arrogance” (traditions, prideful opinions). (24) Achshaph means “enchantment” (occult, witchcraft). (25) Taanach means “hard to pass, sandy” (soulish, double mindedness). (26) Megiddo means “place of troops, crowded place” (distraction, anxiety). (27) Kedesh means “sacred, purity” (man-made holiness standards). (28) Jokneam means “possessed by the people” (celebrity worship). (29) Dor means “dwelling, habitation” (worldly comfort). (30) Gilgal means “circle” (dull of heart, refusing to change, going nowhere). (31) Tirzah means “delight, pleasing” (loving worldly pleasures more than loving God). Jesus sets us free from each of these thirty-one strongholds!
