Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
1 # For ver. 1-5, see
Matt. 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-28 On a Sabbath,#6:1 Some manuscripts On the second first Sabbath (that is, on the second Sabbath after the first) while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples #Deut. 23:25plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2But some of the Pharisees said, #[Matt. 9:11] “Why are you doing #[Ex. 20:9-11]what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3And Jesus answered them, #See Matt. 21:16 “Have you not read #1 Sam. 21:1-6what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4how he entered the house of God and took and ate #Ex. 25:30; Lev. 24:5-9the bread of the Presence, #Ex. 25:30; Lev. 24:5-9which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5And he said to them, #[ch. 5:24]“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
6On another Sabbath, #For ver. 6-11, see Matt. 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6 he entered the synagogue #See Mark 6:2and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7And the scribes and the Pharisees #ch. 14:1; 20:20; [ch. 11:54] watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, #[John 8:6]so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8But #See Matt. 9:4he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, #ch. 14:3is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10And #Mark 3:34; 5:32; 10:23; [Mark 10:21] after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And #[1 Kgs. 13:4]he did so, and his hand was restored. 11But they were filled with #2 Tim. 3:9 (Gk.)fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles
12In these days #See Matt. 14:23he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13And when day came, #ch. 9:1; Matt. 10:1; Mark 3:13; 6:7 he called his disciples #For ver. 13-16, see Matt. 10:2-4; Mark 3:16-19; Acts 1:13 and #See John 13:18 chose from them twelve, whom he named #See Mark 6:30apostles: 14Simon, #Matt. 16:18; John 1:42 whom he named Peter, and #Matt. 4:18, 21Andrew his brother, and #Matt. 4:18, 21James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15and #Matt. 9:9 Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called #[Acts 21:20]the Zealot, 16and #John 14:22Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude
17And #[ver. 12; Matt. 5:1] he came down with them and stood on a level place, with #Matt. 4:25; Mark 3:7, 8 a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of #See Matt. 11:21Tyre and Sidon, 18who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. #Matt. 4:24And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19And all the crowd #Matt. 14:36; Mark 3:10; [Acts 5:15] sought to touch him, for #See ch. 8:46power came out from him and healed them all.

Matt. 5:46
“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34And #[ch. 14:12-14; Prov. 19:17; Matt. 5:42] if you #Ps. 37:26lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35But #ver. 27 love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and #Matt. 5:45 you will be sons of #ch. 1:32;See Mark 5:7 the Most High, for #[James 1:5]he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36#[Matt. 5:7, 48; Eph. 5:1, 2; James 3:17] Be merciful, even as #James 5:11your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
37 # For ver. 37, 38, 41, 42, see
Matt. 7:1-5; [
Rom. 14:13; 1 Cor. 4:5; James 5:9 ] # [

Matt. 6:14; 18:23-35 ] forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38#2 Cor. 9:6-8 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put #Ps. 79:12; Isa. 65:6, 7 into your lap. For #Mark 4:24; [Judg. 1:7]with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
39He also told them a parable: #Matt. 15:14“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40#See Matt. 10:24 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is #2 Cor. 13:11; Heb. 13:21; 1 Pet. 5:10; [1 Cor. 1:10; 2 Tim. 3:17]fully trained will be like his teacher. 41#[See ver. 37 above] Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but #[John 8:7-9]do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43 “For # For ver. 43, 44, see
Matt. 7:16, 20 no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44for #Matt. 12:33each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45#Matt. 12:35; 15:18, 19; [Matt. 13:52; Eph. 4:29] The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces #[Matt. 5:37] evil, #Matt. 12:34for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Build Your House on the Rock

do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47#For ver. 47-49, see Matt. 7:24-27Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.#6:48 Some manuscripts founded upon the rock 49#[Ezek. 13:10-16] But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and #Amos 6:11the ruin of that house was great.”
