This Advent Guide comes from students, faculty and staff at Belmont University. Advent is that season of waiting that carefully and purposefully helps us to realign our priorities and to glimpse, anew, our place before God. Our humble hope is this guide helps people focus more fully on Jesus Christ through the Advent season.

Matthew’s Gospel opens the New Testament by brilliantly introducing the culmination of the entire Old Testament story. After thousands of years and dozens of generations, Jesus had come “to save his people from their sins” (Mathew 1:21). Matthew focuses on Jesus as King of Kings, who had come to reign on the throne of David forever.

Curiosity inspires artists to look at what is in front of them and imagine something entirely different. God asks us to do something similar—to wonder what it might look like for things to be different. In this 4-week devotional series from Grow Curriculum, we'll chase our curiosity and discover what it can look like to care for the people around us.

Exploring Scripture can align ourselves with truth and help us grow in our relationship with God. “The Sermon on the Mount” is the title often given to chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew. It is a summary of the teaching of Jesus. Although the other Gospels present some similar passages in other contexts, it is likely that Jesus actually delivered this speech on only one occasion, but then repeated the same concepts several times on other occasions as well. Matthew Henry, the great Bible commentator, says that the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount is “not to fill our heads with notions, but to guide and regulate our practice”.
