When Work Takes Over

The saying “Another day, another dollar” first came from American sailors in the 1800s who were paid $1 per day. It reflects a weary sense of resignation that the day will be monotonous and tiring, and that its only real purpose is to provide you with a pay packet.

Most of us spend around 90,000 hours working in our lifetime, and so, of course, there are times when work is mundane. It can feel like it lacks purpose or meaning.

And in modern times, work has become all-consuming for many. Devices in our pockets, 24/7 emails, and increasing demands can make work feel like it dominates us. Sometimes it feels like the best parts of life are squeezed into evenings and weekends—and work is just something to get through.

But that’s not how God wants it to be. Every day is a gift, and is filled with purpose and possibility. The apostle Paul says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…” (Colossians 3:23).

Really? Even in exhausting tasks or difficult workplaces? Yes. Following Jesus does not require escaping ordinary work, but learning to meet Him within it.

The yoke of the world says, “You are what you produce. Perform well, and you matter. Fall behind, and you don’t.” The yoke of Jesus says your identity is secure before you achieve anything. And in that, your work becomes worship.

When God put Adam in the Garden of Eden, he was given the job of working and keeping it. We were created to work. It’s not just a means to an end, but part of our worship.

Whether answering emails, cleaning floors, caring for patients, or managing a team, we have the opportunity to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1). He can meet us in our work, take delight in our faithfulness, and sustain us through it all. That means even the most ordinary task—a meeting, a conversation, or a load of laundry—can become an act of worship when it’s offered to Him.

Whether we work for ourselves, a small local business, or a multinational corporation, Jesus is our true boss! Whatever we do, we do it in service of Him—and in that we find a deeper satisfaction.

When we work for Him, even the most ordinary moments are filled with meaning—and that satisfies in a way no promotion or paycheck ever could!

Let’s Pray
Jesus, thank You that my worth is not found in my output, but in belonging to You. Teach me to offer my work as worship, to serve faithfully where You’ve placed me, and to carry Your yoke instead of the crushing demands of this world. Meet me in today’s tasks, and use my work for Your kingdom. Amen.
