When Jesus healed a blind man in John 9, He did more than cure a physical ailment. He opened a heart’s eyes to faith. Yet as the Pharisees interrogated the man, they showed what hearts look like when they are still blinded by proud unbelief. The ministry of Jesus is to transform hearts, turning them to God, as He did for the man born blind.

Throughout the New Testament, Jesus shows compassion toward unlikely “sinners” who expressed great faith. Whether tax collectors, Roman centurions, or Samaritan women, Jesus repeatedly shows that he came to rescue people burdened with shame. Discipleship works against fear. As we obey God’s commands, we entrust ourselves to him. Like the students attending the schools founded by D. L. Moody in Northfield, MA, God’s people “are encouraged to test the meaning and value of the Bible’s teachings experimentally, by acting upon them, and living them out.” As we “test experimentally” the word of God, we will find that we will have fewer and fewer reasons to be afraid. In this prayer, fasting, and consecration guide, we will study men and women of great faith. They were ordinary men and women with significant flaws in their character and often made big mistakes in their life, but they had confidence in an extraordinary God.
