Hosea 5
5
Judgment Coming for Israel and Judah
1“Hear this, you priests!
Pay attention, you leaders of Israel!
Listen, all of you among the royal household!
You are responsible for administering justice, # 5:1 Or “For judgment applies to you.” Hebrew prophetic poetry often has a double meaning. If this is the case, one could translate this verse: “Since you are the ones who are supposed to bring justice, judgment will fall on you.” See
Mic. 3:9–12
.
but you have led the people into idolatry
by setting a trap at Mizpah
and spreading a net over Mount Tabor. # 5:1 Mizpah and Mount Tabor were two places where the leaders entrapped their people in the cultic worship seen among the neighboring nations.
2You have dug a deep ditch of sexual immorality, # 5:2 Or “They are entrenched in their deceitfulness” or “They have made a deep pit of [at] [the city of] Acacia.” The Hebrew of this line is uncertain and possibly has some emendations.
and so, I will punish you all.
3“Israel, you cannot hide from me;
for I know Ephraim # 5:3 Ephraim is used poetically as a metonymy for the Northern Kingdom of Israel. through and through.
Yet you have been unfaithful to me.
Israel’s worship of me is grossly defiled.
4They no longer even know me, Yahweh.
Their evil deeds block the way for them to return to me, their God,
because they are possessed by a spirit of prostitution.
5Israel’s own arrogance speaks for itself.
Israel and Ephraim have no one else to blame,
for their own guilt makes them stumble.
Judah will be dragged down with them.
6No matter how many animals they bring
to offer as sacrifices to Yahweh, # 5:6 Or “With their flocks and herds they go to seek Yahweh .”
they will not find him,
for he has withdrawn himself from them.
7They have been proven unfaithful to Yahweh,
having fathered illegitimate children.
Now, before the new moon festival,
they and their fields will be devoured.” # 5:7 The meaning of the Hebrew of this sentence is uncertain and has a number of interpretations.
Sounding the Alarm in Benjamin
8“Sound the shofar in Gibeah, blow the trumpet in Ramah,
and raise the war cry at Bethel: # 5:8 Or “at the house of evil [Beth Aven],” a derisive term for Bethel. Once the house of God, Bethel had become a center of idolatry.
‘On your guard, men of Benjamin!’ # 5:8 Or “Tremble, O Benjamin” or “We are behind you, Benjamin.” The Hebrew is uncertain.
9When the day of reckoning comes, Ephraim will be overthrown.
For I have pronounced certain doom on the tribes of Israel.”
The Crimes of God’s People
10“I am angry with the leaders of Judah,
for they came into the Northern Kingdom and stole their land. # 5:10 Or “for the princes of Judah are the ones who have removed the ancient boundary stones.”
I will pour my wrath out on them like a flood.
11Ephraim is oppressed, crushed by the verdict,
for having deliberately chased a lie. # 5:11 Or “human reasoning,” “vanity,” or “dung”; that is, idolatry.
12Because of this, I will be like a maggot # 5:12 Or “moth,” “larvae,” or “pus,” the discharge from a festering wound. The Septuagint reads “I will be like a terror to Ephraim.” in the wound of Ephraim
and like gangrene # 5:12 Or “dry rot.” for the people of Judah.
13Once Ephraim realized that he was sick
and that Judah had an ulcer,
Ephraim then turned to Assyria for help
and sent messengers to the great king, # 5:13 Or literally “a king who will contend,” likely an Aramaic idiom for “a great king.” Assyria eventually laid waste to Ephraim in 722 BC.
but he has no power to cure you
or to heal your wound.
14For I will attack Ephraim like a lion
and the land of Judah like a young lion.
I will maul my prey and drag them away,
and no one will be able to snatch them from my hands.
15I will return to my place
until they confess their guilt and seek my face.
Then, in their distress,
they will eagerly seek me and my grace.”
