Hosea 6

6
A Song of Repentance
1And they will say to one another :
“Come, everyone! Come back to Yahweh. # 6:1 Verses 1–3 are in the form of a poetic song of repentance, called a penitential song, like Ps. 6 and Ps. 51 . It is possible that these verses were used liturgically by the priests who led the people in worship. These verses in Hebrew truly reflect the beauty of Hebrew poetry.
Although he hit us hard, # 6:1 Or “has torn us.” now he will heal us.
Although he wounded us, now he will bandage our wounds.
2After two days, he will revive us,
and on the third day he will raise us up. # 6:2 From the writings of the New Testament onward, this text has been applied to the resurrection of Christ on the third day and our resurrection with him. See Matt. 27:63 ; Luke 24:46 ; 1 Cor. 15:4 ; Eph. 2:6 .
Then we will live in his presence # 6:2 Or “so that we may live before his face.”
3and truly know him.
Let us come to know Yahweh intimately
and eagerly press in to know him fully.
He will come to us
as surely as the sun rises to greet us each day. # 6:3 Or “His going forth is as sure as the dawn” or “As sure as the morning, we will find him” (LXX).
He will come to us like refreshing rain,
like a spring rain that showers the earth.”
Yahweh Responds
4“Ephraim, what am I going to do with you?
How should I deal with you, Judah? # 6:4 Ephraim is a poetic term of reference for the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Judah for the Southern Kingdom.
For your faithfulness is as fleeting as the morning mist,
like the dew that quickly disappears.
5This is why I have used my prophets to slice you open # 6:5 The word of Yahweh spoken by the prophets was like a sword in their mouths. Their message was a message of judgment and impending destruction.
and the words of my mouth to slay you.
For my judgments wake you up # 6:5 Or “my judgment goes forth.”
like the blazing light of dawn.
6What I want from you is steadfast love # 6:6 Or “to show mercy” (LXX). not simply dead sacrifices; # 6:6 What pleases God is not outward rituals but the expressions of love that we demonstrate through our lives. Love and mercy are always supreme over every other virtue or deed. See Matt. 9:13 ; 12:7 ; 1 Cor. 13 .
I want you to know me intimately not simply give burnt offerings.
7But, like Adam, you have broken my covenant. # 6:7 Or “at [in] Adam they have broken my covenant.” “Adam” may be a reference to a town (see Josh. 3:16 ). There are obviously a number of possible meanings hidden in this poetic sentence. The essence of this verse is that God’s people have walked over God’s love-covenant and treated it like dirt. There is a play on words with the name Adam (Hb. ʾadam ) and the word for “dirt” (Hb. ʾadama ).
How unfaithful you are to me!
8“Gilead is a city with streets stained with bloody footprints,
a city known for its evildoers.
9“The priests are like a gang of robbers waiting in ambush,
a gang of priests who commit murder on the road to Shechem.
What heinous crimes they have committed! # 6:9 By opening a door of darkness into the land, the priests with their pagan compromises were guilty of causing the deaths of many people. God held them responsible for the judgment he poured out on the people because of their sins. Therefore, they were described as murderers by Hosea.
10“I have witnessed a horrible thing in Israel’s temple; # 6:10 Or “the house [temple] of Israel.”
there Ephraim practices temple prostitution,
grossly defiling Israel.
11aListen to me, Judah!
A harvest of judgment is in store for you too.” # 6:11a This was a bitter warning of the impending captivity of the people of the Southern Kingdom. The Hebrew text adds a line to this verse: “when I restore the fortunes of my people.” However, based on the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia and Hebrew parallelism, this line actually belongs with the first verse of ch. 7 and begins a new section of the book of Hosea. It is important to remember that verse and chapter numbers and headings have all been added to Scripture and are not part of the inspired text.
