Joel 3
3
God Will Judge the Nations
1 # 3:1 Starting with v. 1, this begins ch. 4 of Joel in the Hebrew Bible. “Behold! In those days,
when I restore the fortunes # 3:1 Or “when I turn the turning” or “bring back the captives.” of Judah and Jerusalem,
2I will gather all the nations together.
I will bring them to the Valley of Yahweh’s Judgment. # 3:2 Or “the Valley of Jehoshaphat.” Jehoshaphat means “Yahweh judges.” This is the symbolic name for the valley where Yahweh judges the nations. It is also called the “Valley of Decision.” Tradition locates the Valley of Jehoshaphat near Jerusalem, between the temple and the Mount of Olives. It’s known today as the Kidron Valley.
I will take them to court there
for all they have done against Israel—
my people and my inheritance.
I will execute judgment upon them
because they have scattered my people among the nations # 3:2 This is likely a reference to the deportations of 597 and 586 BC. See Ezek. 21:23–27; Obad. 11–14; Nah. 3:10.
and divided my land among themselves.
3They cast lots for my people
and sold them into slavery.
They traded a boy to pay for a prostitute
and trafficked a girl for a drink of wine. # 3:3 This pathetic situation reveals the cheapening of human life.
4And what have you done to me, Tyre and Sidon
and all you regions of Philistia? # 3:4 Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia were neighboring coastal lands of Israel and Judah.
Are you trying to take revenge on me?
If you are, I will swiftly and speedily pay you back
and return your revenge so that it lands squarely on your own heads.
5For you have stolen my silver and gold
and carried off my valuable treasures into your temples. # 3:5 Or “for your palaces.” See 1 Sam. 5:2; 31:10.
6You have sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks # 3:6 Or “the Ionians,” the ancient name of the Greeks, descendants of Javan (see Gen. 10:2 and the fourth footnote). See also Amos 1:9.
to be taken as slaves far from their homeland.
7Behold! I will rouse them to return
and come back from the places
to which you have sold them.
I will do to you
the very thing that you have done to them.
8Your sons and daughters will be sold as slaves
to the sons of Judah,
who in turn will sell them to the Sabaeans, # 3:8 The Sabaeans were Arab traders from Sheba in southwest Arabia. See 1 Kings 10:1; Job 6:19; Jer. 6:20; Luke 11:31.
who live in a distant land.
I, Yahweh, have spoken!”
A Time for War
9Proclaim this message among the nations:
“Prepare for war!” # 3:9 Or “Sanctify war!” There is a time for war (see Eccl. 3:8). God was summoning the nations to their destruction as his judgment for how they had treated his people, Israel.
Awaken the champions!
Let all you soldiers gather, advance, and march.
10Hammer your plowshares into swords
and your pruning hooks into spears. # 3:10 This is the reversal of the commands in Isa. 2:4 and Mic. 4:3.
Let the weakling say, “I am a champion!” # 3:10 Or “I am a mighty warrior!” See Zech. 12:8.
11Hurry # 3:11 The Hebrew word is a hapax legomenon, which some have translated as “Gather” or “Rally [to help].” and join the battle,
all you surrounding nations.
Come and assemble there.
Yahweh, send down your champions, your warring angels!
Yahweh’s Valley of Judgment
12“Let the nations stir themselves up
and march to the Valley of Yahweh’s Judgment. # 3:12 Or “the Valley of Jehoshaphat.” See v. 2 and the first note there.
There I will sit in judgment
on all the surrounding nations. # 3:12 Although the nations gather to attack Judah, God’s purpose is to bring them to judgment and destruction.
13“Swing the sickle,
for the harvest is ripe for judgment.
Come and tread the grapes of wrath.
The winepress is full
and the vats are overflowing # 3:13 Or “Go in, tread [the grapes], for the winepress is full. Cause the vats to overflow” (LXX). Both the winepress and the sickle are biblical metaphors for God’s judgment (punishment) of the nations. See Isa. 17:5; 63:1–3; Matt. 13:39; Rev. 14:14–20.
for their wickedness is so great!”
14Multitudes! So many multitudes
in the Valley of Decision!
For the day of Yahweh is near
in the Valley of the Verdict.
The Day of Yahweh
15The sun and moon grow dark,
and the stars no longer shine. # 3:15 See Joel 2:10.
16Yahweh roars from Zion,
and his voice thunders from Jerusalem;
heaven and earth tremble.
But Yahweh will be a shelter for his people,
a faithful fortress for Israel.
The Glorious Future of Israel
17“Then you will know that I am Yahweh your God,
who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain.
Jerusalem will be a sanctuary,
and foreigners will never conquer it again.
18A time is coming when the mountains
will drip with new wine
and the hills will flow with milk, # 3:18 That is, the mountains will be covered with freshly planted vineyards, which will produce grapes for new wine, and the hills will graze many flocks and cattle, which will supply the people with an abundance of milk. See Amos 9:13.
and all the arid streambeds of Judah
will run with water year-round.
A fountain will spring from Yahweh’s temple
and descend to the valley of acacia trees. # 3:18 The valley mentioned here is Acacia or Shittim (shittim means “acacia bushes”). This was the location of the last camp Israel made before crossing the Jordan River and entering the promised land (see Josh. 2:1 and second footnote; 3:1). Joel was prophesying an outpouring of water from the Temple Mount that will flow into the Jordan Valley and beyond, watering even the desert (see Ezek. 47:1–12).
19“Egypt will become a desert
and Edom a desolate wilderness
because of the atrocious acts of violence
they committed against the people of Judah,
whose innocent blood they shed in their land.
20-21I will avenge their blood and not spare the guilty,
but Judah will be inhabited forever,
Jerusalem from generation to generation,
and Yahweh will dwell in Zion.”
