Many curiosities lace the life Jesus lived on earth. One of the incidents happened the day several disciples turned their uncertainty into a fishing trip. Their Master, Jesus, had suffered a cruel death on a Cross, had been buried for three days, rose to life again, and had appeared to them with the announcement that He was soon to leave them again.

What were they to do with that information? They went fishing.

They’d fished all night with their nets on the port side of the boat. All night. Nothing. Although they didn’t recognize Who He was, in the morning a man on the shore called out to them, asking if they’d caught anything. The Man said, “Cast your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.”

The distance between the port and starboard sides of the boat couldn’t have been more than a few feet. For reasons unknown to us, the expert fishermen obeyed the stranger’s advice and cast their nets on the opposite side. The haul of fish was so great, they struggled to drag them all to shore.

Was the story told to log yet another miracle in the journal of the life of Jesus? Or is there an application for us?

“Cast your net on the other side,” speaks to my heart. Sometimes I miss the right thing, but not by much. What I perceive as failure could be a misjudgment by a few feet. Solution? Listen carefully to the direction Jesus gives me, whether it seems to make sense or not. —Cynthia Ruchti
