Jesus’ Trial, Death and Resurrection (As Recorded by John)

DAY 8 OF 10

Easter: the good news is breaking through slowly

They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” (John 20:2)

The Lord Jesus had been crucified on Friday. Early the following Sunday, another prophecy was fulfilled, namely, “that He must rise from the dead." Jesus conquered death. He left the tomb. Now it was clear that He had won the battle against Satan. Jesus' mission was complete and successful.

But this was not immediately clear to everyone. Mary Magdalene and some other women visited the tomb early in the morning and saw that it was open. Horrified, Mary ran to the group of disciples and told them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb!” It didn't even occur to her that He might have risen. Two disciples went to see for themselves. They noticed that the cloths wrapped around Jesus' body were neatly rolled up. This did not indicate a grave robbery. By these clear signs, at least one disciple began to believe that a miracle had happened.

Explaining the slow, unbelieving reaction of Jesus' followers, John notes, “As yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead.” Jesus' resurrection had already been foretold. Jesus Himself had also spoken of it. But the disciples had not understood it. As a result, the good news of Jesus' resurrection did not reach them until later.

Has the festive news of Easter really gotten through to you yet? What does it do to you?
