DAY 3: CAST ALL MY CARES

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you

We wrote the song “Cast All My Cares” with our friend Karina, a very gifted songwriter, worship leader, singer and a wonderful human. The morning we sat down to write, she shared that over the weekend that had just passed, they had a significant medical emergency in their family. In that moment of feeling helpless, and without knowing how things would end or turn around, she turned to 1 Peter 5.

We all have moments in our lives where we don’t necessarily choose humility, but find ourselves humbled by our circumstances. We are powerless to change the outcome, and we can’t find peace or a way forward on our own.

1 Peter 5:6-7 instructs us to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand. The same mighty hand that we are taught is never too short to save. We are invited to cast our cares upon Him.. and I love this next bit.. for He cares for you. In our culture, it is hard to imagine extreme power coupled with profound care. But yet this is the character of the God we worship. Able to save a nation in a moment with the same hand that reaches to quietly heal one person in need. When we cast our cares upon the Lord, we choose humility. It is a practice of recognising that there is plenty in life that we simply cannot carry on our own. And we can trust that we are not placing our cares into the hands of one who is indifferent, distant or incapable of understanding. Instead, we place our cares into the hands of a God who cares for us, who is close, and who understands suffering personally.

Karina shared 1 Peter 5:6-7 that morning, and though things had fortunately started to turn around for the better, we were all deeply impacted. As we began to sing, the words “cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” seemed to flow effortlessly, as a timely reminder that we are not left in our own strength. Rather, that He is able to carry our burdens. He cares for each one of us.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you that You are both all powerful, but also all caring. Help me to trust that You are with me in moments of catastrophe and also there in the detail of life. Help me to humble myself under Your mighty hand and to not instinctively try to carry my burdens on my own. Right now I cast my cares on You, and as I name them, the ones that weigh the heaviest, I thank You that You care for me, that You are able to carry the burden. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
