Jesus makes it clear that He came to change the way people think about religion and freedom. The audience He spoke to was experiencing intense challenges from those in power, which left them feeling completely hopeless. Jesus describes a relationship with Him as light and easy, but it requires trusting Him with everything—including the sins we struggle with.
When Jesus references a yoke, His audience would know exactly what He meant. In case your mind goes immediately to your favorite breakfast food, the yoke He’s describing is a piece of wood used to pair two animals together when carrying a heavy load. Jesus uses this illustration to represent the burdens we carry every day.
In Matthew 11, Jesus says His yoke is easy and His burden is light. For some people entering their relationship with God, this may seem hard to believe. Life can be extremely difficult, and sometimes the weight of our circumstances feels overwhelming. While Jesus doesn’t promise that these challenges will disappear, He does promise a peace that transcends our circumstances, providing relief even in our hardest moments. We’re reminded that we never have to go through life alone. The only thing we’re asked to do is surrender those burdens completely to the Lord and trust Him.
