Jesus’ Wealth Warning: Will Your Money Keep You Out of Heaven?

DAY 2 OF 5

Is Jesus really saying that rich people cannot enter heaven?

Some Bible verses make us feel encouraged. Others challenge us. And then here comes Matthew 19:24 – a verse that makes most of us very uncomfortable.

“Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” – Matthew 19:24

A camel through the eye of a needle? That’s not just difficult – that’s impossible.

Over the centuries, various scholars have claimed that Jesus was making a point in reference to a narrow gate (the “eye of the needle”) leading into the city of Jerusalem. In that case, for the owner and camel to enter the city, the cargo (the “worldly riches”) needed to be offloaded, then everything could be squeezed through the city gate.

That sounds nice. If that were true then we might understand Jesus as saying wealth and worldly possessions are not a hindrance to our salvation, as long as we take extra measures in balancing them with our faith.

But that is NOT at all what Jesus is saying.

Check what he tells his disciples in the very next verse:

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:25-26

Jesus is saying that it is impossible for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God, except with God’s help.

In the last reading we found that Jesus condemned the pursuit of wealth and worldly success as detestable to God. Here, Jesus is pointing out that even the mere possession of wealth hinders our salvation.

Why does he say that?

He says this because money competes for our hearts. Money can become our identity, our security, our master.

And it’s not just about money – it’s about whatever we value highly. Status, career, possessions, or even relationships.

The Bible is clear – riches are a dangerous trap. They blind us to our need for God. They lure us into complacency. They deceive us into thinking we’re in control.

But does that mean God wants you poor? No it does not.

God wants you trusting him – more than your money, your status, others or yourself; and to do this, even though it is so easy, and comes so naturally, for us to place our trust in our abilities, our position or our money.

Which is exactly the point Jesus is making here.

Jesus wants you free. Free from the grip of greed. Free from trusting wealth instead of Him. Free to loosely hold onto whatever is in your hand.

So take stock of your situation today. Your job. Your position. Your money. Your possessions.

Can you let them go? Is your faith so sure that you can follow Jesus, even when it seems contrary to what the world values so highly?

The only way to enter the Kingdom of Heaven is with God’s help. There is absolutely nothing on earth that you can do, or that can help you – no matter what the world may say.

Are you ready to exercise that kind of radical faith in your life?
