Don’t Just Scroll—Live on the Word
If Jesus were to be tempted today, I wouldn’t be surprised if his response to the devil would have been ‘People do not live by content alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’
We live in a world saturated with content. Some good, some bad. Some biblical, some not. Some practical and wise, and some impractical and foolish. Even the good, biblical content can become a distraction if it doesn’t lead us to pick up the Bible for ourselves and read or listen to its content directly. The Bible is the only thing that we are supposed to live by, not other people’s interpretations of its contents. Sermons, devotionals, and other Bible tools are only good if they take us back to the source, the infallible Word of God. It is God’s Word, not my revelation that will be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. My words are just supposed to nudge you towards it.
If you have flipped past the words of the Bible in today’s devotional to read my words, can I gently ask you to go back and read the words of the biblical text? This is what we live by. This is what changes us. This is where the power is!
Questions for reflection: Have I read the Bible verses in this devotional? Do I usually skip the Bible readings and head straight to the commentary in books or devotionals? Do I view the words of the Bible as more important than the words of others?
