Learning to Hear God's Voiceಮಾದರಿ

We have established that God desires to speak to us, and that God will always speak in alignment with His Word. But how we handle and interpret Scripture is vital. The Word must interpret the Word. In other words, we cannot take a Scripture (or a portion of Scripture) in isolation and use it to back up what we believe God is saying. We must search out the Scriptures and see what God says in other passages.

Scripture and verse should be held in the context of the collective Word. Unless the chapter is your lifestyle, don’t claim the verse as your promise! Isolation breeds error. This is true in the body of Christ and is also true in how we handle Scripture.

In both the Old and New Testaments, there is a principle mentioned of establishing every matter on the testimony of two or three witnesses. And this is a great principle to apply when we believe we have heard God speak.

Anything of meaning that God wants to communicate to us will be established through a few "witnesses" of Scripture. If we believe we have received a particular revelation, we will be able to find evidence of Scripture testifying to that on more than one occasion. This requires listening to the whole counsel of the Word of God, not just knowing a solitary verse or phrase.

We can also apply the witness of Scripture, the witness of prayer, and the witness of oversight when we are seeking to hear God’s voice, particularly on big decisions. Submit it to Scripture. Submit it in prayer to the Lord. And submit it to your oversight and ask if you are correctly interpreting what you believe God has said. Many catastrophic situations can be avoided if we follow these principles.
