Day 2: Working From Rest, Not For Rest
The traditional work model teaches us to work hard now so we can rest later:
- Work hard in your 20s-60s so you can rest in retirement
- Work hard Monday through Friday so you can rest on the weekend
- Work hard all day so you can rest in the evening
But notice something fascinating about God's design in Scripture: Rest comes first, then work.
God's pattern: Rest first, then work
In creation, God established the Sabbath not as a reward for work completed, but as the foundation from which work springs. The Israelite day began at sundown, with rest, not at sunrise with work.
Jesus's invitation in Matthew 11 isn't to work harder so we can eventually find rest. It's to come to Him first for rest, then to work alongside Him ("take my yoke").
This inverted pattern challenges our entire approach to work and income.
The alternative formula most people never discover
There's another income equation that changes everything:
Assets × Yield = Income
With this formula, your income isn't limited by your personal time. Instead, it's determined by:
- How many income-producing assets you build or acquire
- The yield (return) those assets generate
This isn't just a financial formula – it's a reflection of a deeper spiritual truth: when we build from rest rather than for rest, our work becomes more fruitful with less striving.
What working from rest looks like
When even a portion of your income comes from assets rather than hours:
- You can approach work from a position of choice rather than desperation
- Seasons of rest don't mean financial disaster
- You can say "no" to opportunities that don't align with your values
- You can say "yes" to unpaid but meaningful service
A moment of reflection
Consider these questions:
- Do you find yourself constantly working toward rest that never fully arrives?
- In what ways might financial pressures be preventing you from accepting Jesus's invitation to soul-rest?
- What small step could you take toward building assets that generate income without constant personal effort?
A prayer for rest-based productivity
Father, forgive me for the times I've reversed Your design – working endlessly for rest rather than working from a place of rest in You. Help me challenge the assumptions of a world that measures worth by productivity. Show me how to build assets – both spiritual and financial – that bear fruit even in seasons of rest. May my work flow from Your rest, not compete with it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
