Islands, Tides, and the Deep: A Marriage Message From the Sea

DAY 3 OF 3

The Dark Depths:

If it wasn’t for the calling on my life to homeschool my children, I’d be oblivious to the fact that there are creatures that live so deep and tucked away in the depths of the ocean that they need their own light on their heads: creatures called lanternfish, the fangtooth fish, or the viperfish. Creatures with long teeth, ugly faces, and deep, dark colors that make them difficult to see...creatures that honestly make me question any water where I can’t see the bottom.

Our marriages can face deep, hidden threats when we allow dark places to exist — places where pain, bitterness, or sin are left unaddressed. These “deep creatures” only gain power when we give them somewhere to hide.

Throughout Scripture, we’re reminded of the importance of walking in the light. God is light. His Word brings clarity, truth, and healing. It reveals what’s been hidden and leads us back to peace and restoration.

Why does that matter so much? Because the enemy does his best work in the dark. In secrecy. In silence. But when we choose to live in the light, bringing our struggles, our sins, and our wounds into the open, the devil loses his grip. Proverbs 28:13 encourages us to confess our sins and not conceal them because it’s here in confession that we will find mercy. The Bible talks so much about confession: it’s referenced more than 40 times in the Bible.

So let’s make God’s light our home. Let’s invite His Word to illuminate every corner of our marriage, especially the places we’d rather keep tucked away.

Challenge: Shine a Light

Take 10–15 minutes alone with God today and ask Him: “Is there anything in my heart that I’ve been keeping hidden?” It could be an unspoken hurt, a private sin, a lingering resentment, or even a fear you haven’t voiced. Write down anything He reveals. Confess to God and pray for His light to flood in and take you towards repentance.

Then, bring it into the light with your spouse. Share gently and with humility — not to place blame, but to pursue healing and unity.

Because healing begins where the light gets in.

About this Plan

Islands, Tides, and the Deep: A Marriage Message From the Sea

I recently took my kids to a track meet on the Mississippi coast. That morning, I ran along the beach — perfect weather, gentle breeze, cloudless sky, and a quiet shore. Unlike Florida’s crashing waves, Mississippi’s calm waters offer a different kind of beauty, thanks to the barrier islands in the distance. If we pay close enough attention, we can learn something from the depths of the sea, the rising of the tide, and the protection of the islands that can grow and encourage our marriage.
