The Tree Life Chose Me

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2: Provide Shade
Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort. Jonah 4:6

Have you ever stood under the shade of a tree on a really scorching summer day? The sun is burning, but the moment you step into the shade, it feels cooler and peaceful. I remember when we went on church retreats, we would always look for the biggest tree we could find so we could sit under it. That is what happened to Jonah. He was feeling angry, upset, and frustrated at God’s decision of showing mercy to the people of Nineveh. Jonah wanted them to be punished but the merciful God forgave them when they repented, and Jonah did not like that. So, Jonah sat outside the city, frustrated. While he acts out of anger, God shows great care towards him by causing a plant to grow quickly and provide shade for Jonah.

The purpose of the plant was only to provide shade in that situation for Jonah to help him feel better while he was going through emotions. The Bible says about God, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.” (2 Cor 1:4) Christians are meant to offer spiritual shade to others. In a world full of hatred and anger, God calls us to provide comfort for others. People should feel safe with us, not judged. They should walk away refreshed, not burned by our words, actions, or judgement.

Being a kind person does not come naturally. It comes from being rooted in God’s wisdom. When we spend time in prayer, read His Word, and invite the Holy Spirit to guide us, we begin to reflect His nature. It is not our own strength that helps us listen well, give wise counsel, or love unconditionally; it is God working through us.

Reflection: Are you a source of shade for others? Do people feel comforted by your presence, or worn down by your words?

Prayer: Lord, help me be a source of spiritual shade for others. Teach me to bring comfort, not judgment. Let Your love shine through me so I can be a blessing to those around me. Amen.

About this Plan

The Tree Life Chose Me

All throughout the Bible, God uses the image of trees to teach deep spiritual truths. Trees are God’s amazing creations. They provide fruits, shade, and clean the air. However, beyond being used as a resource, trees reflect something greater: the life of a believer. We did not choose to be like trees, God designed us that way, to live rooted, fruitful, and unshakable lives in Him.
