The Artist's Identity: Rooted and Secure

DAY 3 OF 7

The Comparison Trap

Social media nearly destroyed my artistic confidence. Every morning, I'd scroll through Instagram seeing other artists' successes—their gallery openings, sold-out collections, perfect studios. By the time I entered my own modest workspace, I felt deflated before I even began.

Comparison is particularly poisonous for artists because our work is so personal. When we compare, we're not just measuring skill or success—we're measuring souls. And that's a game nobody wins. The artist you're comparing yourself to is fighting battles you know nothing about, just as you're facing challenges they can't see.

God broke me free from this trap when He showed me that comparison is actually a form of pride. It assumes I know better than God what my journey should look like. It says His plan for me isn't as good as His plan for someone else. Ouch.

When your identity is rooted in Christ, you can celebrate others' successes without feeling diminished. Their gallery opening doesn't mean there's less opportunity for you. Their unique voice doesn't make yours less valuable. In God's Kingdom, there's abundance, not scarcity. We're not competing; we're complementing.

Creative Prayer Exercise: Choose an artist whose success has triggered comparison in you. Create something small as a gift for them (even if you never send it). As you create, pray for their continued success and thank God for the unique gifts He's given both of you. Let this act of generosity break comparison's power.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for the arrogance of comparison. I repent of thinking I know better than You what my journey should look like. Help me celebrate others' gifts without feeling threatened. Root me so deeply in my identity in Christ that I can rejoice when others succeed. Show me the beauty of my unique path. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

The Artist's Identity: Rooted and Secure

Your worth isn't determined by gallery acceptances, sales figures, or Instagram likes—it's sealed in heaven. Artist mentor Matt Tommey guides you through building an unshakeable identity in Christ that withstands criticism, rejection, and creative dry seasons. Through 7 days of Scripture, vulnerable stories, and practical exercises, discover how to separate your identity from your art, overcome comparison, weather creative seasons with grace, and create from overflow rather than striving. Learn to build on the Rock so that no storm can shake your calling. Because you're not what you create—you're who He created you to be.
