Brothers in the Battle
Other than the lineage of Jesus, if I could pick a biblical list to be on, it would be King David’s "Mighty Men."
Think about it. Of all the hundreds of thousands of men who fought for David, only 37 reached the "Mighty Man" level.
These men fought lions, giants, and armies. They stood their ground and defied the odds. They performed crazy acts of bravery that many others ran from.
They were not intimidated as they fought hard, gave everything they had, then gave some more.
But why did they do this? Why did they risk their lives for a man on the run?
In 2 Samuel 23, the list of these men says that they came from all over Israel. In a time without cell phones or the internet, these men somehow found their way to David and risked their lives defending the nation and the future king.
Without talking to each other first, these men saw the battles of their day, decided to do something about it, stepped forward, and made a difference.
They were relentless in their pursuit of the enemy, focused on why they were doing it, and became brothers.
These are great “men” stories. The kind you sit around the campfire and retell for years to come.
We need these stories now. Not the battle ones—the brotherly ones.
When it comes to the battle of loneliness, we need to understand that we face a strong enemy. One that keeps us isolated and intimidated.
If we let that enemy win, our brothers will fall all around us.
But if we see the battles of our day, decide to do something about them, and step forward, we can make a difference.
We may not be chasing the Philistines, but we are in a battle.
Men, if you are feeling lonely, guaranteed, there is someone else nearby who is also feeling lonely.
Find him.
When you do, step onto the battlefield with him.
You might just find the brother you were looking for.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You see me in my loneliness. Help me see others who are feeling the same way. Give me the courage to connect with them so we can battle our loneliness together. Amen.
Reflection: Where is one place you can go to connect with other men? Maybe the church, a club, or volunteering somewhere? Find some place to connect and go do it.

Loneliness is an uncomfortable word for men. The first “not good” moment in Creation was when God saw that Adam was alone (Genesis 2:18). Loneliness was a concern for God right from the beginning. Over the next week, we will look into what the Bible says about loneliness and see the hope Jesus offers men.
