         <div class="label">17</div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="DEU.17.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Do not sacrifice to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="DEU.17.1"></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="DEU.17.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God in violation of his covenant, </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="DEU.17.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky, </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="DEU.17.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="DEU.17.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="DEU.17.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="DEU.17.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Law Courts</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="DEU.17.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="DEU.17.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge&#8212;whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults&#8212;take them to the place the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God will choose. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="DEU.17.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="DEU.17.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> will choose. Be careful to do everything they instruct you to do. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="DEU.17.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Act according to whatever they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="DEU.17.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Anyone who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God is to be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="DEU.17.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The King</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="DEU.17.13"></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="DEU.17.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">When you enter the land the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, &#8220;Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="DEU.17.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">be sure to appoint over you a king the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="DEU.17.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has told you, &#8220;You are not to go back that way again.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="DEU.17.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="DEU.17.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="DEU.17.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="DEU.17.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="DEU.17.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">A Common Destiny for All</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ECC.9.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God&#8217;s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ECC.9.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">All share a common destiny&#8212;the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">9:2 </span><span class="ft">Septuagint (Aquila), Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew does not have </span><span class="fq">and the bad</span><span class="fqa">.</span></span></span><span class="content"> the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ECC.9.2"><span class="content">As it is with the good,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ECC.9.2"><span class="content">so with the sinful;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ECC.9.2"><span class="content">as it is with those who take oaths,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ECC.9.2"><span class="content">so with those who are afraid to take them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ECC.9.2"></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ECC.9.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ECC.9.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Anyone who is among the living has hope</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">9:4 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">What then is to be chosen? With all who live, there is hope</span></span></span><span class="content">&#8212;even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ECC.9.4"></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ECC.9.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">For the living know that they will die,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ECC.9.5"><span class="content">but the dead know nothing;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ECC.9.5"><span class="content">they have no further reward,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ECC.9.5"><span class="content">and even their name is forgotten.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ECC.9.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ECC.9.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Their love, their hate</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ECC.9.6"><span class="content">and their jealousy have long since vanished;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ECC.9.6"><span class="content">never again will they have a part</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ECC.9.6"><span class="content">in anything that happens under the sun.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ECC.9.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ECC.9.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ECC.9.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ECC.9.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun&#8212;all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ECC.9.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ECC.9.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">I have seen something else under the sun:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="content">The race is not to the swift</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="content">or the battle to the strong,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="content">nor does food come to the wise</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="content">or wealth to the brilliant</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="content">or favor to the learned;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"><span class="content">but time and chance happen to them all.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ECC.9.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ECC.9.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ECC.9.12"><span class="content">As fish are caught in a cruel net,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ECC.9.12"><span class="content">or birds are taken in a snare,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ECC.9.12"><span class="content">so people are trapped by evil times</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ECC.9.12"><span class="content">that fall unexpectedly upon them.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Wisdom Better Than Folly</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ECC.9.12"></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ECC.9.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ECC.9.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ECC.9.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ECC.9.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">So I said, &#8220;Wisdom is better than strength.&#8221; But the poor man&#8217;s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ECC.9.16"></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ECC.9.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ECC.9.17"><span class="content">than the shouts of a ruler of fools.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ECC.9.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ECC.9.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Wisdom is better than weapons of war,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ECC.9.18"><span class="content">but one sinner destroys much good.</span></span></div><div class="b"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ECC.9.18"></span></div>

         <div class="label">8</div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.8.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">And Saul approved of their killing him.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Church Persecuted and Scattered</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.8.1"><span class="content">On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ACT.8.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.8.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Philip in Samaria</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.8.3"></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.8.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.8.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.8.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.8.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.8.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">So there was great joy in that city.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Simon the Sorcerer</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.8.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.8.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.8.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, &#8220;This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.8.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.8.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.8.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.8.13"></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.8.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.8.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.8.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.8.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.8.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.8.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles&#8217; hands, he offered them money </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.8.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">and said, &#8220;Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.8.19"></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.8.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Peter answered: &#8220;May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.8.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.8.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.8.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.8.23"></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="ACT.8.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Then Simon answered, &#8220;Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="ACT.8.24"></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.8.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Philip and the Ethiopian</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.8.25"></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="ACT.8.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, &#8220;Go south to the road&#8212;the desert road&#8212;that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="ACT.8.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">8:27 </span><span class="ft">That is, from the southern Nile region</span></span></span><span class="content"> eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means &#8220;queen of the Ethiopians&#8221;). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="ACT.8.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="ACT.8.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">The Spirit told Philip, &#8220;Go to that chariot and stay near it.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="ACT.8.29"></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="ACT.8.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. &#8220;Do you understand what you are reading?&#8221; Philip asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="ACT.8.30"></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="ACT.8.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">&#8220;How can I,&#8221; he said, &#8220;unless someone explains it to me?&#8221; So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="ACT.8.31"></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="ACT.8.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="ACT.8.32"><span class="content">&#8220;He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="ACT.8.32"><span class="content">and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="ACT.8.32"><span class="content">so he did not open his mouth.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="ACT.8.32"></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="ACT.8.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="ACT.8.33"><span class="content">Who can speak of his descendants?</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="ACT.8.33"><span class="content">For his life was taken from the earth.&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">8:33 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="ISA.53.7">Isaiah 53:7</span>,<span class="ref" usfm="ISA.53.8">8</span> (see Septuagint)</span></span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="ACT.8.33"></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="ACT.8.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">The eunuch asked Philip, &#8220;Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="ACT.8.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="ACT.8.35"></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="ACT.8.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, &#8220;Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="ACT.8.37"><span class="label">[37]</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">8:37 </span><span class="ft">Some manuscripts include here </span><span class="fqa">Philip said, &#8220;If you believe with all your heart, you may.&#8221; The eunuch answered, &#8220;I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.&#8221;</span></span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="ACT.8.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="content">And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. </span></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="ACT.8.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="content">When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="ACT.8.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.</span></span></div>
