 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">The Purity of the Camp</div><div class="p">1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease#5:2 The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated &#8220;leprosy,&#8221; was used for various diseases affecting the skin. or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.&#8221; 4The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.</div><div class="s1">Restitution for Wrongs</div><div class="p">5The Lord said to Moses, 6&#8220;Say to the Israelites: &#8216;Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way#5:6 Or woman who commits any wrong common to mankind and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guilty 7and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. 9All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. 10Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Test for an Unfaithful Wife</div><div class="p">11Then the Lord said to Moses, 12&#8220;Speak to the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;If a man&#8217;s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure&#8212;or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure&#8212; 15then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah#5:15 That is, probably about 3 1/2 pounds or about 1.6 kilograms of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing.</div><div class="p">16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, &#8220;If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband&#8221;&#8212; 21here the priest is to put the woman under this curse&#8212;&#8220;may the Lord cause you to become a curse#5:21 That is, may he cause your name to be used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, may others see that you are cursed; similarly in verse 27. among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Then the woman is to say, &#8220;Amen. So be it.&#8221;</div><div class="p">23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial#5:26 Or representative offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. 28If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.</div><div class="p">29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Moral Benefits of Wisdom</div><div class="q1">1My son, if you accept my words</div><div class="q2">and store up my commands within you,</div><div class="q1">2turning your ear to wisdom</div><div class="q2">and applying your heart to understanding&#8212;</div><div class="q1">3indeed, if you call out for insight</div><div class="q2">and cry aloud for understanding,</div><div class="q1">4and if you look for it as for silver</div><div class="q2">and search for it as for hidden treasure,</div><div class="q1">5then you will understand the fear of the Lord</div><div class="q2">and find the knowledge of God.</div><div class="q1">6For the Lord gives wisdom;</div><div class="q2">from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.</div><div class="q1">7He holds success in store for the upright,</div><div class="q2">he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,</div><div class="q1">8for he guards the course of the just</div><div class="q2">and protects the way of his faithful ones.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">9Then you will understand what is right and just</div><div class="q2">and fair&#8212;every good path.</div><div class="q1">10For wisdom will enter your heart,</div><div class="q2">and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.</div><div class="q1">11Discretion will protect you,</div><div class="q2">and understanding will guard you.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">12Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men,</div><div class="q2">from men whose words are perverse,</div><div class="q1">13who have left the straight paths</div><div class="q2">to walk in dark ways,</div><div class="q1">14who delight in doing wrong</div><div class="q2">and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,</div><div class="q1">15whose paths are crooked</div><div class="q2">and who are devious in their ways.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">16Wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman,</div><div class="q2">from the wayward woman with her seductive words,</div><div class="q1">17who has left the partner of her youth</div><div class="q2">and ignored the covenant she made before God.#2:17 Or covenant of her God</div><div class="q1">18Surely her house leads down to death</div><div class="q2">and her paths to the spirits of the dead.</div><div class="q1">19None who go to her return</div><div class="q2">or attain the paths of life.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">20Thus you will walk in the ways of the good</div><div class="q2">and keep to the paths of the righteous.</div><div class="q1">21For the upright will live in the land,</div><div class="q2">and the blameless will remain in it;</div><div class="q1">22but the wicked will be cut off from the land,</div><div class="q2">and the unfaithful will be torn from it.</div>

 <div class="label">16</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Shrewd Manager</div><div class="p">1Jesus told his disciples: &#8220;There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2So he called him in and asked him, &#8216;What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.&#8217;</div><div class="p">3 &#8220;The manager said to himself, &#8216;What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I&#8217;m not strong enough to dig, and I&#8217;m ashamed to beg&#8212; 4I know what I&#8217;ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.&#8217;</div><div class="p">5 &#8220;So he called in each one of his master&#8217;s debtors. He asked the first, &#8216;How much do you owe my master?&#8217;</div><div class="p">6 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Nine hundred gallons #16:6 Or about 3,000 liters of olive oil,&#8217; he replied.</div><div class="p">&#8220;The manager told him, &#8216;Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.&#8217;</div><div class="p">7 &#8220;Then he asked the second, &#8216;And how much do you owe?&#8217;</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;A thousand bushels #16:7 Or about 30 tons of wheat,&#8217; he replied.</div><div class="p">&#8220;He told him, &#8216;Take your bill and make it eight hundred.&#8217;</div><div class="p">8 &#8220;The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.</div><div class="p">10 &#8220;Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else&#8217;s property, who will give you property of your own?</div><div class="p">13 &#8220;No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.&#8221;</div><div class="p">14The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15He said to them, &#8220;You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God&#8217;s sight.</div><div class="s1">Additional Teachings</div><div class="p">16 &#8220;The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.</div><div class="p">18 &#8220;Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.</div><div class="s1">The Rich Man and Lazarus</div><div class="p">19 &#8220;There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man&#8217;s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.</div><div class="p">22 &#8220;The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham&#8217;s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, &#8216;Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.&#8217;</div><div class="p">25 &#8220;But Abraham replied, &#8216;Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.&#8217;</div><div class="p">27 &#8220;He answered, &#8216;Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.&#8217;</div><div class="p">29 &#8220;Abraham replied, &#8216;They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.&#8217;</div><div class="p">30 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;No, father Abraham,&#8217; he said, &#8216;but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.&#8217;</div><div class="p">31 &#8220;He said to him, &#8216;If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>
