DAY 4 OF 10

From Restless to Fulfilled—Refining Your Working World

At Willow, we continually remind our staff that every interaction they have throughout the course of a day either builds up our culture or breaks it down. It either blesses other people or burdens them by adding unnecessary drag. Thinking through every interaction you engaged in yesterday, which added clutter to your life by breaking down the culture of your workplace or adding unnecessary drag to someone’s life?

Each day when you go to work, you have a choice in how you approach your job. Will you honor God with your attitude and be, as Paul writes, “a worker who does not need to be ashamed”?

We ask our Willow staff members to be culture builders. We ask them to spend at least fifteen minutes of “chair time” with God before they drive onto our campus. We ask them to be filled with the Holy Spirit and eager to display the fruit of the Spirit, so their interactions throughout the day will be a blessing to their teammates. I make the same challenge to you. No matter how healthy or dysfunctional your work culture is today, you can choose, by the power of Christ, to become a culture builder. You can be someone who blesses every person who crosses your path, from senior executives to entry-level workers.

I’ve learned that when I show up for work committed to being a culture builder, my job becomes even more fulfilling than it already is. In some way, my culture-building efforts lift other people’s spirits, which in turn lifts my spirits. Even my smallest attempt to add value to the life of a fellow staff member seems to make a difference, and I pray that it helps that other person move closer to Christ.

Question for reflection: What would happen tomorrow morning if you walked into your workplace fired up to build a healthier culture and create a more joyful, Christ-honoring work environment?
