Blackest darkness is reserved for them. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2PE.2.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2PE.2.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity&#8212;for &#8220;people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2PE.2.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2PE.2.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2PE.2.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Of them the proverbs are true: &#8220;A dog returns to its vomit,&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">2:22 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="PRO.26.11">Prov. 26:11</span></span></span></span><span class="content"> and, &#8220;A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.&#8221;</span></span></div>

Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2PE.3.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">But they deliberately forget that long ago by God&#8217;s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2PE.3.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2PE.3.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2PE.3.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2PE.3.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2PE.3.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2PE.3.16"></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2PE.3.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2PE.3.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
