A GOOD WOMAN (AND MAN) IS HARD TO FIND
Pastors often use Proverbs 31 for their Mother’s Day sermon. As a young wife and mother, it was sometimes difficult to hear those sermons without feeling a sense of “not measuring up” if the focus was solely on the amazing things this woman accomplished. I am the mom of four kids, and when they were little my days
were filled with diaper changing and rocking babies, I was lucky if I got the
dishes washed.
Of course, what this wife does is worthy of recognition, but her accomplishments are not where her value lies. This women is described as: Surpassing all other women” (31:29) because what she does and how she does those things flow out of who she is. It isn't her role or accomplishments that define her but rather she is honored above all others for her noble character.
I have met many amazing Christian women over the years that have occupied different roles in life and all had noble character. Our roles in life and the tasks we perform may differ one from another and may even change with the passage of time but when we live our lives in reverent fear of the Lord it will be demonstrated in the manner we love and serve the people in our lives. I am glad my kids remember that I made them chocolate chip cookies, but I hope they remember me more for my inner strength and trust in God… as a woman who feared the Lord.

Although the Proverbs seems like a loosely composed wisdom sayings, on a whole they actually present Christians with an opportunity to contemplate Christ who is wisdom in the flesh. The Proverbs that are selected invites you to a practice of 'ora et labora' , we contemplate Christ and work in his world—the essence of Christian life.
