Re:Generation

DAY 4 OF 7

The Giants

I was very small in High school and growing up where I did in the UK, we played a lot of rugby, it wasn’t a great combination. I remember one particular game when I was the last man standing as the biggest player on the other team came hurtling towards me. It was definitely my David and Goliath moment.

I had a choice; let him run past me (through me more like) or stand my ground.

It was in that moment where I had to make a decision. Was I who everyone else said I was? Would I accept the idea that I was ‘too small’? Or would I decide to take hold of the courage within me and show that I could be someone different to who others told me I was.

I dropped my shoulder and flattened the guy, honestly much to my surprise. But I can remember the moment so vividly, as in my head I celebrated like a gladiator in the Colosseum.

Imagine being Joshua and Caleb, having come back from spying out the promised land, rich with opportunity and provision, only to have your co-spys bottle it when reporting back to Moses. And what was their complaint? “The people there are giants…”

The 10 other spies focused only on the challenge, allowing fear to rob them of their inheritance.

Giants are the challenges and problems which intimidate us, control our behavior, stagnant change in our lives or so dominate our desires we do things we’d never want to. Some are obvious, some are subtle.

Perhaps there’s a giant named “Fear of Failure” in your family. No one has stepped up to face it down and live differently by taking a risk or stepping out in bold faith. Everyone plays it safe but they’re plagued by the guilt of not living a bigger life, often offended by people with vision and drive.

Or maybe it’s the giant of Comparison which has become a powerhouse of pride and overachieving in your life. You struggle to rest and find peace because Comparison is always close by. You find yourself pushing others down to keep yourself up.

We all have giants that we need to face down. What are yours?

What giants can you see in your life?

What giants can you see in the lives of your parents?

What intimidates you? What stops you changing?
