Is there really a devil?

Charles Darwin’s 1859 theories on natural selection and survival of the fittest initiated a large-scale abandonment of the Bible’s teachings on creation. Among the many casualties of this radical revolution of thought is the disappearance of the idea that the evil in our world was brought by a fallen angel, Satan, the devil. 

The fact that so many people today don’t believe in the devil unfortunately does not make him disappear. In fact, his work gets easier when he and his demons can work undetected. The Bible opens a window so that you and I can see what is really going on in the universe. The trouble began with a revolt in heaven: “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down — that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” (Revelation 12:7-9).

Since he couldn’t overcome God and the good angels, led by St. Michael, Satan turned his fury on God’s children, and he persuaded them to join his conspiracy of evil. Christ’s death on Calvary delivered a mortal blow to the old serpent, but he’s still alive, still urges on his demons, and is still actively seeking to persuade humans to commit spiritual suicide and join him.
