DAY 7 OF 7

Letter to the Church of Laodicea

Thoughts on the Passage

Laodicea was a prosperous city. It was the banking center of this region. It sold expensive textiles and sold an eye salve that was used around the world. The prosperity caused the Christians to confuse physical prosperity with spiritual prosperity. With everything they had, surely God was blessing them. No, Jesus saw them as people with tremendous poverty. Every area of physical blessing was matched with spiritual poverty. Gold and wealth? No, they were poor and needy. Beautiful textiles for clothing? No, they were naked. Expensive world renown eye salve? No, they were blind and needed healing. Jesus said that all these needs could only be met by Him. The physical blessings were blinding them to their spiritual needs.

Second, Laodicea had a water problem. The water source that they had came through pipes to the city and it was full of minerals that made the water terrible to drink when it was warm. The two cities nearby – Colossae and Hierapolis had great water (one cold refreshing water and the other hot springs). Jesus tells them they are just like this water problem. Jesus wants to spit it out. He is willing to discipline them to help them deal with these issues.

Finally, Jesus shows them His heart. He wants to sit down with them and fellowship with His church here. He loves them deeply and is willing to humble Himself and knock to be allowed in. I am going to share more about this tomorrow. But it is a powerful picture of humility.

What is Jesus humbly asking of you and I today?  Let’s listen.

The video link gives a video of Laodicia and the challenges God gives it.

Prayer

Father, today is a powerful lesson in both the pride of our hearts and humility of Jesus. Our pride shows up in our blindness, loss of perspective and the error of our thinking. I have it as much as everyone else. The scary thing is that we do not see it.  We think we are okay with just a few problems. We do not see ourselves the way You see us – people in desperate need. So today, I ask that you open my heart to see myself and see You the way that I need to. Open my heart to receive the good things that You have to give that will meet our every need. Thank you for the humility to just knock… and wait for us to open the door to You. Thank you. I pray in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Day 6

About this Plan

Jesus' Letter To You - Prophetic Gallery Series

Letter writing is a form of communication that is lost. So when you receive a personal letter from someone who loves you, it is truly something to treasure. Jesus took the time to “write” personal letters to each of the seven churches. These letters contained unique messages each church needed to hear. In Plan 2 of 13 devotions taking us through Revelations, let’s see how these letters can help us today.
