Expect survival 

When Mary and Joseph arrived at the inn, there was no room for them. They were forced to find shelter elsewhere. Similarly, Nila and her family found themselves looking for shelter when their home was destroyed by Cyclone Mora. 

As the flood water rose, Nilu’s husband, Kor, piled their mattresses up to stay dry. They climbed to the top of the pile with their portable cooker so they could still make food away from the flood water. To make sure their young sons, Nerob and Neamul, stayed safe, Nilu and Kor took turns to stay awake through the long night. 

They survived for as long as they could in their house, frightened the whole time of drowning and scared of running out of food. After two days, with no sign of the waters receding, they managed to wade out and find shelter in a school. Packed in tight with many other families who had fled the waters too, they only had rice and dal (lentils) to eat. 

This Christmas, we are supplying food for families whose livelihoods have been destroyed by floods. Good food may seem like a simple solution, but it represents the extraordinary love of God in desperate times.

Father, we thank you that you sent your son to the world, that we may have life. We ask that Christians in Bangladesh are able to celebrate Christmas freely, aware of your presence as they head into the new year. Amen.
