 <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1">Hezekiah&#8217;s Illness</div><div class="p">1In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, &#8220;This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.&#8221;</div><div class="p">2Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3&#8220;Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.&#8221; And Hezekiah wept bitterly.</div><div class="p">4Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5&#8220;Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, &#8216;This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">7Then Isaiah said, &#8220;Prepare a poultice of figs.&#8221; They did so and applied it to the boil, and he recovered.</div><div class="p">8Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, &#8220;What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?&#8221;</div><div class="p">9Isaiah answered, &#8220;This is the Lord&#8217;s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?&#8221;</div><div class="p">10&#8220;It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,&#8221; said Hezekiah. &#8220;Rather, have it go back ten steps.&#8221;</div><div class="p">11Then the prophet Isaiah called on the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.</div><div class="s1">Envoys From Babylon</div><div class="p">12At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah&#8217;s illness. 13Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his storehouses&#8212;the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil&#8212;his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.</div><div class="p">14Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, &#8220;What did those men say, and where did they come from?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;From a distant land,&#8221; Hezekiah replied. &#8220;They came from Babylon.&#8221;</div><div class="p">15The prophet asked, &#8220;What did they see in your palace?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;They saw everything in my palace,&#8221; Hezekiah said. &#8220;There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.&#8221;</div><div class="p">16Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, &#8220;Hear the word of the Lord: 17The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 18And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.&#8221;</div><div class="p">19&#8220;The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,&#8221; Hezekiah replied. For he thought, &#8220;Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?&#8221;</div><div class="p">20As for the other events of Hezekiah&#8217;s reign, all his achievements and how he made the pool and the tunnel by which he brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 21Hezekiah rested with his ancestors. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.</div>

Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.</div><div class="s1">Judging Others</div><div class="p">37 &#8220;Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">39He also told them this parable: &#8220;Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.</div><div class="p">41 &#8220;Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother&#8217;s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, &#8216;Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,&#8217; when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother&#8217;s eye.</div><div class="s1">A Tree and Its Fruit</div><div class="p">43 &#8220;No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.</div><div class="s1">The Wise and Foolish Builders</div><div class="p">46 &#8220;Why do you call me, &#8216;Lord, Lord,&#8217; and do not do what I say? 47As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">The Day of the Lord</div><div class="p">1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.</div><div class="p">3Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4They will say, &#8220;Where is this &#8216;coming&#8217; he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.&#8221; 5But they deliberately forget that long ago by God&#8217;s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.</div><div class="p">8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.</div><div class="p">10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.#3:10 Some manuscripts be burned up</div><div class="p">11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.#3:12 Or as you wait eagerly for the day of God to come That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.</div><div class="p">14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15Bear in mind that our Lord&#8217;s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.</div><div class="p">17Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.</div>
