 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">Moses and the Burning Bush</div><div class="p">1Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3So Moses thought, &#8220;I will go over and see this strange sight&#8212;why the bush does not burn up.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, &#8220;Moses! Moses!&#8221;</div><div class="p">And Moses said, &#8220;Here I am.&#8221;</div><div class="p">5&#8220;Do not come any closer,&#8221; God said. &#8220;Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.&#8221; 6Then he said, &#8220;I am the God of your father,#3:6 Masoretic Text; Samaritan Pentateuch (see Acts 7:32) fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.&#8221; At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.</div><div class="p">7The Lord said, &#8220;I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey&#8212;the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 9And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.&#8221;</div><div class="p">11But Moses said to God, &#8220;Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?&#8221;</div><div class="p">12And God said, &#8220;I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you#3:12 The Hebrew is plural. will worship God on this mountain.&#8221;</div><div class="p">13Moses said to God, &#8220;Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, &#8216;The God of your fathers has sent me to you,&#8217; and they ask me, &#8216;What is his name?&#8217; Then what shall I tell them?&#8221;</div><div class="p">14God said to Moses, &#8220;I am who I am.#3:14 Or I will be what I will be This is what you are to say to the Israelites: &#8216;I am has sent me to you.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">15God also said to Moses, &#8220;Say to the Israelites, &#8216;The Lord,#3:15 The Hebrew for Lord sounds like and may be related to the Hebrew for I am in verse 14. the God of your fathers&#8212;the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob&#8212;has sent me to you.&#8217;</div><div class="q1">&#8220;This is my name forever,</div><div class="q2">the name you shall call me</div><div class="q2">from generation to generation.</div><div class="p">16&#8220;Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, &#8216;The Lord, the God of your fathers&#8212;the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob&#8212;appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. 17And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites&#8212;a land flowing with milk and honey.&#8217;</div><div class="p">18&#8220;The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, &#8216;The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.&#8217; 19But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him. 20So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.</div><div class="p">21&#8220;And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed. 22Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver and gold and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder the Egyptians.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">36</div><div class="s1">Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem</div><div class="p">1In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah&#8217;s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. 2Then the king of Assyria sent his field commander with a large army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. When the commander stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer&#8217;s Field, 3Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to him.</div><div class="p">4The field commander said to them, &#8220;Tell Hezekiah:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? 5You say you have counsel and might for war&#8212;but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me? 6Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. 7But if you say to me, &#8220;We are depending on the Lord our God&#8221;&#8212;isn&#8217;t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, &#8220;You must worship before this altar&#8221;?</div><div class="pm">8&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses&#8212;if you can put riders on them! 9How then can you repulse one officer of the least of my master&#8217;s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen#36:9 Or charioteers? 10Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this land without the Lord? The Lord himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to the field commander, &#8220;Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don&#8217;t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.&#8221;</div><div class="p">12But the commander replied, &#8220;Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall&#8212;who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?&#8221;</div><div class="p">13Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, &#8220;Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you! 15Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, &#8216;The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.&#8217;</div><div class="p">16&#8220;Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, 17until I come and take you to a land like your own&#8212;a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.</div><div class="p">18&#8220;Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, &#8216;The Lord will deliver us.&#8217; Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? 20Who of all the gods of these countries have been able to save their lands from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?&#8221;</div><div class="p">21But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, &#8220;Do not answer him.&#8221;</div><div class="p">22Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had said.</div>

He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.</div><div class="p">6 &#8220;He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, &#8216;They will respect my son.&#8217;</div><div class="p">7 &#8220;But the tenants said to one another, &#8216;This is the heir. Come, let&#8217;s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.&#8217; 8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.</div><div class="p">9 &#8220;What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10Haven&#8217;t you read this passage of Scripture:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The stone the builders rejected</div><div class="q2">has become the cornerstone;</div><div class="q1">11 the Lord has done this,</div><div class="q2">and it is marvelous in our eyes&#8217; #12:11 Psalm 118:22,23 ?&#8221;</div><div class="p">12Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.</div><div class="s1">Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar</div><div class="p">13Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. 14They came to him and said, &#8220;Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren&#8217;t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax#12:14 A special tax levied on subject peoples, not on Roman citizens to Caesar or not? 15Should we pay or shouldn&#8217;t we?&#8221;</div><div class="p">But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. &#8220;Why are you trying to trap me?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.&#8221; 16They brought the coin, and he asked them, &#8220;Whose image is this? And whose inscription?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Caesar&#8217;s,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p">17Then Jesus said to them, &#8220;Give back to Caesar what is Caesar&#8217;s and to God what is God&#8217;s.&#8221;</div><div class="p">And they were amazed at him.</div><div class="s1">Marriage at the Resurrection</div><div class="p">18Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19&#8220;Teacher,&#8221; they said, &#8220;Moses wrote for us that if a man&#8217;s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23At the resurrection#12:23 Some manuscripts resurrection, when people rise from the dead, whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?&#8221;</div><div class="p">24Jesus replied, &#8220;Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26Now about the dead rising&#8212;have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, &#8216;I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob&#8217;#12:26 Exodus 3:6? 27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1">The Weak and the Strong</div><div class="p">1Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2One person&#8217;s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4Who are you to judge someone else&#8217;s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.</div><div class="p">5One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.</div><div class="p">10You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister#14:10 The Greek word for brother or sister (adelphos) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God&#8217;s family; also in verses 13, 15 and 21.? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God&#8217;s judgment seat. 11It is written:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;As surely as I live,&#8217; says the Lord,</div><div class="q1">&#8216;every knee will bow before me;</div><div class="q2">every tongue will acknowledge God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#14:11 Isaiah 45:23</div><div class="m">12So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.</div><div class="p">13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.</div><div class="p">19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.</div><div class="p">22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.#14:23 Some manuscripts place 16:25-27 here; others after 15:33.</div>
