Day 17 – Are you in the right relationship?

How many of us have haphazardly traveled through life and allowed the wrong relationships to form in our lives? There have been many times in my life that I simply moved at my own pace, without first checking in with God, resulting in involvement in the wrong relationships. Because of this, before entering into any relationship, I now ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to me God’s will. I ask the Holy Spirit to make it clear to me whether a person belongs in or out of my life.

After my college years, unaware of the importance of asking God for discernment and requesting the Holy Spirit to guide me in the area of relationships, I accepted a marriage proposal from my boyfriend at the time. However there was one problem – I never checked in with God. After months of planning, I began asking God for His will. It was then that God instructed us that this was not the direction we were to move forward in. As a result, the relationship was brought to an end.

So, how do you really know if you are in a relationship God intended for you?

Check in with the Master

Just imagine; had I sought God first, I would have saved time, heartache, pain, and money. For every relationship we encounter, it is extremely important to check with God first. Connecting with the right person not only affects our lives, but our loved ones’ lives as well. Nothing teaches us this lesson better than the story of Esther. Her marriage to King Ahasuerus had a God intended purpose and an awesome power.

In Esther 4:14, Mordecai suggests to Esther that she was put in the place of royalty for such a time as this. Because she was in the right place at the right time, she was able to save her people from death. But, what if she had connected with the wrong person, or had been disobedient to the plans God had for her life? This reminds us: the person we are connected to can either help or hinder us. So what about you, are you in the right relationship for such a time as this?
