Yesterday Today Forever

DAY 8 OF 15

Philip, here, asks Jesus to show him the Father. There is a level of sadness in Jesus’ response, a sadness which reveals His passion for why He came to the earth. There is a deep desire in the response of Christ for all of us not to miss the point! Why did Jesus come?

The Father sent Jesus to show us who He is, to remove the question of who the Father is and what His character, heart and love towards us are really like. Philip had seen miracles, had seen the massive crowds, had seen the work of the Spirit through Jesus, and yet still he missed why Jesus had come.

Jesus’ response is both confronting and reassuring. He leaves no room for doubt that He and the Father are one. He doesn’t try and explain the Father; He simply points to Himself. He leaves no room for a pixelated image of the Father. Jesus doesn’t show the disciples a photo of His instagram, so to speak. He just points to Himself. Jesus is the clearest depiction of the Father. “What you see in front of you is the Father,” we hear in Jesus’ response. What a freeing moment for Philip, who, in asking the question, “Show us the Father?” reveals the desire of every human being: “Show us truth. Show us love.”

Jesus is the unpixelated image of the Father. Let doubts and fears be driven far from our minds as we see the image of the invisible God in the face of Jesus Christ.
