Connecting During DeploymentSample
An Awesome God
It was a dark and stormy night—it really was. The phone rang late . . . not totally unexpected. One of our military couples from church was struggling big time with the husband stationed thousands of miles away. My husband and I had met with them before, but on this night I heard outright fear and hopelessness. I grabbed my Bible and headed out the door to spend some time with this dear wife.
Minutes later, on our knees, we sought trust from God’s word. Specifically, we turned to Psalm 145, which reflects David’s awe of God—central to our faith.
Read verses 1 through 7.
I had my friend read those verses out loud. I asked her, “What does this say to you?” She replied, “That God is in control. That He is in charge.” I asked her if she could tell me how God had been faithful in her life in years past. She could, and she did.
Read verses 8-13.
I asked, “What does this mean to you?” Quietly, with tears, she spoke, “God loves me!”
Read verses 14-19.
Once again, we paused and I asked, “What about these verses . . . what do they say to you?” She whispered, “God is listening, and He cares! If He can take care of the universe, He can take care of me. I have some hope.”
Now finish reading Psalm 145 with verses 20 and 21.
That night I prayed first, and then she prayed—from deep within her heart. We talked for a while about “next steps” regarding her circumstances.
We read the entire Psalm 145 again and prayed again before I left.
I checked on my friend the next morning. God gave her peace that night . . . and He continues to do so many years later. What an awesome God we serve!
1. Read the first three sections of Psalm 145 and ask yourself the same questions I asked my friend.
2. Read Psalm 145:20-21. Each of you choose something to praise the Lord for.
