UNPACK This... Rams Vs. Patriots

DAY 2 OF 5

Relatability and Adaptability

Achieving a 26-23 victory over the New Orleans Saints in this year’s NFC Championship, the Los Angeles Rams have proven once again they’re built for the postseason.

Although they’re a talented team with young stars and savvy veterans, the person gaining the most attention for the success of this team is 33-year-old head coach, Sean McVay.

Quickly bringing relevancy and credibility to the Rams over the past two years, McVay continues to be complimented for his offensive innovation, passion, eidetic memory, and leadership skills.

In an article on Bleacher Report, Brent Sobleski wrote, “McVay’s relatability, accountability, and adaptability are his greatest assets.”

Earning the respect of both younger and older players, McVay has done a great job of winning the locker room with his “relatable” and “adaptable” coaching style. The word relatable means “easy to understand and feel connected to” and adaptable is defined as “the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions.”

These characteristics provide tremendous value for a head coach, but they also translate well into our own lives. As followers of Jesus, we desire to love others well and connect with them for eternal purposes. When we consider what Jesus has done in our own lives, we desire for others to know Him and follow Him too.

In order to have these conversations with people, being relatable and adaptable is very important. We need to be easily understood as we find a commonality that people can connect with. Of course, we stay grounded in truth, but we adjust how we present it based on who we’re speaking to.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:22 about his experience adapting to the Jews and to the Gentiles: “When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.”

Sean McVay uses his relatability and adaptability to win football games. Let’s take on these same qualities to develop authentic relationships that help win others to Christ. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can unpack that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, show me ways to be more relatable and adaptable so that doors will open to share the Gospel with others. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
