2 Timothy: Guard The GospelSample

When faith in Jesus is costly for us, we will respond in one of two ways. We will either be embarrassed by Jesus or be prepared to suffer for him. Alone in his Roman prison cell, Paul has been abandoned by many of his fellow believers. The Christians in Rome are still in contact with Paul (4:21), as well as his friend Luke who has stayed with him (4:11). Others – like Timothy – are continuing Paul’s work while he is in chains (4:11–12, 19–20). But most of the believers in Asia have deserted him. Many of these believers would have been converted through Paul and discipled by him, but none are prepared to identify with him now. They have turned away in fear or shame; it is too costly for them to stand by him.

In contrast, Onesiphorus has been a loyal friend. He travelled to Rome and searched hard for Paul to encourage and help him – probably providing for his physical needs with food and clothing. He was unashamed of Paul’s chains; he didn’t abandon Paul because of the cost to his own reputation. He was loyal – both to Paul and to Christ.

We may not experience physical suffering ourselves but, like Onesiphorus, we will have opportunities to show we are unashamed of Jesus by supporting fellow believers who do suffer. How will we respond to these opportunities? Will we turn away in shame or will we be willing to suffer alongside them if necessary?

When we are tempted to turn away, we need to remember that Jesus willingly suffered shame and loss on our behalf. As he died on the cross, he was stripped of his clothing, his dignity, his reputation and his life. He was rejected by the crowds, betrayed by his friends, abandoned by his followers and forsaken by his Father. He experienced rejection, so we could know acceptance. He was abandoned, so we could be welcomed. He is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters (Heb. 2:11). We mustn’t be ashamed of him and we mustn’t be ashamed of our brothers and sisters.

Pray for Christians who are suffering because of their faith (see www.barnabasfund.org  or www.opendoorsuk.org  for more details). How can you stand alongside and support these believers? Pray that God will make you unashamed and willing to identify with those who are despised for their faith in Jesus.
