Wisdom Of The Teacher For College Students, Ch. 12Sample
The proverbs of the wise function like a prod to live differently for those who heed them. The sayings of the Lord, (the Shepherd), are firmly fixed in place as if they have been properly nailed into place.
In a society were truths seem to be ever changing, this assurance can provide us with an anchor for our souls. A careful study of God’s Word provides a solid foundation upon which to build our lives.
The last verse in this section may have greater appeal to those during mid-semester exams but it’s not what you think. This has more to do with limiting the amount of time spent reading pagan literature in the Teacher’s day. Books were becoming more prevalent and with them came a rash of ideas that were not in alignment with the truth of God.
That’s always a danger for modern disciples. Discernment in reading is necessary for all of us. We may have to know it for a test, but that doesn’t mean we have to believe it as truth or allow it to affect our worldview. Reading opinions different from our own can be helpful in challenging us to provide a defense of our faith, but need to be balanced with reading that helps us develop that defense.
