Jesus Revealed Pt. 14 - Why Do They Hate Me?Sample
Jesus Instructs Them on the Holy Spirit
Thoughts on the Passage
Jesus opens their understanding (and ours) to the Holy Spirit.
To many people, their understanding of the Holy Spirit is what He can do for us. That is a big part of His role, but it is much greater. Jesus gives clarity to the role of the Spirit.
First, the Spirit speaks into this world. His role will be to speak to all people of this world – bringing conviction and drawing them to Jesus.
Second, He is the Spirit of Truth. He leads God’s people into truth. In a world where truth is twisted, distorted, perverted to fit their purposes, the Spirit defines truth and leads us into it. His words guide us through the maze of distortions to the purity of God’s truth.
Third, the Spirit speaks like Jesus. The disciples knew the voice and words of Jesus. The Spirit will speak the same words and the same wisdom into their lives. He will honor Jesus with everything He does. He will honor and speak with the authority of the Father just like Jesus did in His earthly ministry. In other words, there will be a seamless transition from Jesus to the Spirit as they face the future.
Fourth, the Spirit is forward looking as well – not just looking back at Jesus. He will speak into the situations that are to come. His words reveal the example of Jesus to help us when we struggle, but they also give immediate wisdom to guide us in specific daily needs.
Fifth, the disciples did not have the capacity to understand everything that Jesus spoke – and there were things Jesus could not explain to them. The Holy Spirit will remind them of the things Jesus said. The Holy Spirit will speak the things that they could not comprehend or deal with. He will release ALL truth as we can bear and understand.
Application
The Holy Spirit has the lead role in this world. Take time to ask for understanding where we have taken the lead role – and give it back to Him. We would never have taken the lead role if Jesus were present – do not take it from the Spirit.
Ask the Spirit who He is and listen to His convicting voice in our world. Ask Him to lead us.
Time to Pray
Father, I see afresh that the Holy Spirit leads my life just like Jesus led the apostles. Where I have tried to lead, forgive me I pray. I choose today to follow His Truth in a world filled with distorted truth. I choose to listen to the words of Jesus through the voice of the Spirit – and obey them just as if Jesus were standing beside me today. I choose to love the Spirit and His authority just as I love You with all my heart and honor You as my King, Father, Saviour, Redeemer and Friend. Holy Spirit, receive this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan
There’s no doubt that we gravitate to the promises of God. The side we don’t like is the side of struggle when following Jesus. Walking and living for Jesus will bring both great and difficult times. Jesus warns us about these days and the way people will respond to us because of how they respond to Him. Take heart – Jesus hasn’t left us alone– we have the Holy Spirit!
