Follow Me: An Unending Conversation With Christ

DAY 3 OF 4

Jesus was never in a hurry. Scripture says He needed to go to Samaria; He had a divine appointment with the woman at the well. Jesus also had a divine appointment with me—and He has one with you, but first, we have to slow down, take a deep breath, and prepare to drink some deep well-water.

Do you have questions needing answers? Have you found yourself wrapped in what feels more like a coat of religion than a mantle of relationship? Now is the time to lay aside preconceived ideas about conversations with God and simply ask Jesus to speak truth to you. He is ready to meet you right where you are.

Jesus asks the Samaritan woman, “Would you draw water, and give Me a drink?” (John 4:8). As I sensed the Holy Spirit asking me the same, I recognized my response was one of obedience but emptiness. My own well was dry. How could I refresh anyone when I was so empty?

My conversation with the Lord resembled this:

My Dearest Lord Jesus, I have loved stepping into Scripture and talking with You. Can You help me find the pieces of my heart I have lost? Holy Spirit, breathe life over those places that were joyful, life-giving, and God-pleasing places. Those places that cause others to seek You and want to know You. The unforced rhythm of grace place—that place of sweet communion. How do I find my way back?

His response was one of instruction—that I was to “holdfast.” Hold to what He placed within my hands, and not to what others or even myself might reach for: presumption, expectations, or the future. I searched the Scriptures for “hold fast,” and I was captured by what God was saying to me. “My uprightness and my right standing with God I hold fast and will not let them go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days and it shall not reproach me as long as I live” (Job 27:6).  “Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live” (Proverbs 4:4). I will never get over how God can speak a word, a picture, or drop a Scripture into the conversation and give depth, life, hope, faith, and love.

The Lord knows all about you—where you’ve been, what you’ve done, and all your strengths and weaknesses. Today, He asks you for a drink of water. What will you say?

About this Plan

Follow Me: An Unending Conversation With Christ

As believers, we are called to a lifetime of walking and talking with Him. As I explored the Gospel of John, God began to cultivate conversation and prayer from His heart to mine. My hope is that as you read through this devotional, you too will linger in His presence and allow His Word to become a divine conversation-starter.
