3 Weapons of a Spiritual WarriorSample
DAY FOUR – Weapon #2: Fasting
Esther called a fast, asking the people not to eat or drink for three days. Fasting is a way we strengthen our spirits as we surrender our flesh. It is a physical sacrifice that allows us to reap a spiritual reward.
If you have been dealing with discouragement, anger, rage, a compulsive habit, or something else you haven’t been able to break free of, perhaps it is time to lay something aside.
Most people think of a fast as abstaining from all food and drinking only water, but there are many ways to fast. Some people abstain from meat to symbolize a sacrifice of the flesh and sinful mindsets and activities. Some people fast from sweets to symbolize letting go of the temptations we can so easily fall into. Some people even fast from social media and television, which to me symbolizes a sacrifice of distractions.
If the enemy can distract you, he can disconnect you, and before long you will find you are more consistent in checking how many likes you have than in spending time with God. We must learn to recognize the tactics of the enemy!
The most important thing in fasting is not how long you fast or what you abstain from but what you do while you’re fasting.
When we fast, we should spend the time we would have been eating or engaging in entertainment praying and reading the Word.
