Help To OvercomeSample
There’s one person who knows exactly how you feel when you are tempted, because he experienced the same temptations you have, but successfully overcame them all. His name is Jesus Christ and you know His temptations were far more powerful than any of ours because the great tempter himself, Satan, attacked Him with the most powerful temptations possible.
Read carefully Hebrews 2:17-18 because Jesus wants to be invited to help when you are tempted:
17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like Hisbrethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertainingto God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
Hebrews 2 states that because He was tempted like us, He is now a merciful and faithful High Priest for us. And, perhaps most important in this discussion, Jesus goes beyond just knowing of our temptations, the Bible states “He is able to aid those who are tempted.” If you ever wanted to talk to a person who knows where you’ve been regarding fighting temptations, then Jesus is your person!
When the Bible states He is “able to aid” those who are tempted, what does this mean? The verb “is able” means to have all the power or authority to achieve the desired action. Because He is both our Mighty God and our merciful and faithful High Priest, Jesus has all power and authority available to Him, whether on earth or in heaven.
The verb “aid” is translated from the Greek word boetheo which means to run to give relief and comfort. Boetheo is a compound verb from boe which means “a shout” and theo which means “to run” for the purpose of assisting the person in need. The word captures the intensity with the “shout” with the intention “to run to aid” the person in need. When you call on Jesus, He shouts and comes directly to your aid.
Jesus leans forward in readiness to help you when you are suffering under temptations.
