Empowered by the Spirit
The Holy Spirit empowers us to be His witness! Before the beginning of their earthly mission, Jesus instructed his followers to wait until He sent His Spirit, who would supply the power behind the task that lay ahead. This massive mission - advancing the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth - would certainly necessitate such power! We encourage you to stop right now and read Acts Chapter 2 where we see the guarantee from Peter that this promise of experiencing the fullness of the Spirit is for everyone who will ever call on the name of the Lord!
In the same way, Jesus wanted His disciples to wait and be filled - God wants to continually fill us with His Presence.
We see an outline in the book of Acts 1:8 as Luke describes the mission that was ahead of this small group of disciples. The very same Spirit that empowered the disciples for this great mission is the Spirit that dwells within us as Christ-followers. He empowers us to do extraordinary things through the power only God can supply. Sometimes that can be courage, perseverance when times are tough, or even giving us the right words to say to someone when being His witness.
Think about those times when someone comes to your mind. Almost out of nowhere, it seems. Maybe you're not even sure why. Perhaps it just feels like a gut feeling, or you feel compelled to reach out to someone, only to realize it was perfect timing.
We could all think of times when someone had encouraged us with words or shown us love just when we needed it the most. That's His Holy Spirit at work, that's Him helping us with our purpose!
If you desire this work, all you have to do is ask! Luke 11:13 records an incredible promise from the lips of Jesus: "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
Prayer:
"God, I may not understand everything about you or your Spirit. I've even seen some people do weird things who claim to know You or the Holy Spirit. All I know is I want all you have for me. I want all the joy, power, peace, strength, and victory you have available. I am asking you right now, in Jesus' name, would you baptize me with your Holy Spirit? I want to be filled today and every day with Your Presence and power. I need you and all you have to walk through this life. And not just for me - but to be the kind of witnesses that the people around me need - so that just like Peter, I can be bold for Christ."
