DAY 5 OF 7

Action begins in the heart, as we understand the power of our calling in Christ. We have spent significant time developing the importance of a renewed heart. Now it’s time to see how this plays out in the practical application of living a life of action (faith).

Momentum is a critical component of action. The definition of momentum is “the impetus gained by a moving object.” It can also be defined as “the quantity of motion of a moving body measured as a product of its mass and velocity.” The object in question is our heart; it gives motion to our body. Faith brings the heart to life, and the inward working of the Spirit gives our heart dreams, thoughts, ideas, vision, and mission—all of which have mass in the spirit.

Scientifically, multiple actions exerted in the same direction on one particular object produce motion. When motion is accelerated through this same process we have momentum. Momentum is very hard to slow down. Just ask the avalanche that has absorbed all of the little flakes of snow on the side of the mountain. As it comes crashing down with force we would be hard pressed to stop its momentum. Yet, the real power of the avalanche is with the individual flakes of snow slowly being combined in the overall direction of the whole.

As we grow in our understanding of our calling in the kingdom of God we quickly start gaining momentum. God’s Spirit works powerfully inside of us to give our life kingdom direction and kingdom significance. We find that little steps of obedience, combined with prayer, surrender, and the Word, are the raw ingredients for a spiritual avalanche. Action steps to implement this inner transformation quickly produce velocity and motion. We are moving toward the high calling for our lives (Phil. 3:14).

Honestly, momentum is the key to success in life. The more motion toward a Spirit-birthed direction in the kingdom of God, the more purpose our life will carry. Momentum is the key to living a life beyond our current level of thinking. Momentum releases the thoughts of God like a flood into our minds. We find ourselves overtaken by both substance as well as motion. God is always on the move! Momentum helps us keep up with Him. We yearn for His inner working in our heart to produce external momentum.

I like to say that momentum is our God-given cry for more—more of God’s love, more of God’s presence, more of God’s direction, more of His vision, more of His grace, more of His strength, more of His purpose in our heart and life. It’s the yearning for the direction of our life, measured by action, to be meaningful and eternally significant.

I’m not saying that there aren’t times when God has us pull away for a season of pruning or waiting. I certainly don’t mean to imply that life has no obstacles or challenges. Indeed, suffering is a part of the Christian life. What I am saying is that when we get the big picture of heaven’s perspective, we realize that even these seasons of seeming retreat are really cumulative in their nature. They are individual action steps in our spiritual life that, when surrendered to the hands of God, ultimately fulfill a purpose much bigger than us.

Think big—believe!
